ceiling light not working - wiring advice

hello

the light in one of our bedrooms has stopped working (and yes i've tried with a different bulb)

i've taken the rose off to have a look to see if anything had come loose, and the earth isn't in place, but looks like it never was. but could this be the fault?

cheers
the earth's not the fault, though the fact you're asking that question makes me think that you could be right about calling the landlord to sort it out...

if you're wanting to sort it yourself though, then the next step seeing as there's nothing obvious in the ceiling rose would be to switch the power off at the main fuseboard (if in doubt about which circuit to switch off, just use the main switch for the entire house), then unscrew the light switch from the wall and see if any of the wires have come loose from the switch. If one of the wires in the switch is obviously loose / disconnected, then reconnect it (if you feel competent to do this), switch the power back on and your light should be sorted.

if you can't see anything obvious in the light switch, then I'd say give it up and call the landlord.

wiring diagrams for lightswitches can be found on the web, or you can check what should be wired where by unscrewing an identical lightswitch elsewhere in the house and copying how that's wired, but be warned that there are several different ways to wire up lights in a house, and there may be several wires coming into the switch as they can be wired so the wire for the next light in the circuit comes terminates in that switch as well... or it could be dead simple and you'd just have the live wire from the main lighting circuit, and the switched live wire going from the switch to the light... both of which would usually be red (or brown in old circuits).

best to ring a sparky if you're not confident in what you're doing, but no real harm IMO in having a quick look behind the switch to see if it's something really obvious and easy to fix. (with the power off)

Just thought....
was the light not working before you got your drill out?
There's always a possibility you may have chomped through a cable.

no, the light was borked long before i started waving my drill around. and i made sure i used one of them scanners to check for cables and things before i started making holes in the walls :)

cheers free spirit - i did try to have a look at the switch, but even unscrewing it i couldn't get it open - well and truly stuck in the wall - either by paint or plaster. anyway, the teen informed me yesterday that the light stopped working when she banged against it a while ago (she has a very high up bed) - so it's possible that if it's not the wiring in the rose, it might possibly be a dodgy connection in the pendulum bit that the bulb fits into.

true - but from experience i have found that it's often easier for me to fix things myself than to nag someone else to come and do it for me! i asked them before the school holidays to come and fix her broken curtain rail (they had done a bodge job originally and all the plaster had crumbled and the fixings came out of the wall) - i ended up doing it myself on saturday.

I hope someone has suggested you check the lighting circuit on the fusebox, before you start digging around in the fittings.

If it is not marked or made obvious, the lighting circuts are usually rated at 5 amps.

dodgers, please ask me for a list of stuff to speak to the landlord about before you start nagging them about this one thing, I've got more :D

Ah, ok.
Possibility it might be the lampholder pins stuck/loose.
