cats got a swollen head

no, he's has intensive care on his head for a couple of weeks now, we thought it had all healed but this looks very dodgy, his head looks awful. worst bit it that he almost looks like he's had enough, just sleeping mostly, sometimes hiding under me daughter's bed and trying to hobble about a bit very occasionally. its all happened quick like. aw, it really ain't looking good, am close to tears here...:(

well, he's keeping on. other half found a massive red bloody swollen lumpy thing under the fur on his massive swollen cheek this morning and bathed it. he didn't move all night off the couch. still looks a mess so we're calling the vets again to see what they say.

so the vets have been, lanced the extremely large abcess (with pus squirting into the eye of one of them, there was such a build-up). they've given him 2 lots of antibio injections and another painkilling injection, if he doesn't start eating within 24 hours, they recommend that he's put down cos that would indicate that his kidneys have probably failed, and an op to try to rectify any internal probs would probably kill him anyway.

so we wait and wait some more. it isn't looking good but he does like a fight so here's hoping and praying.

Oh I'm glad that it's an abscess. I know that sounds odd, but I was fearing something worse.

Hope he pulls through.

(((Scaredy's kidlees)))

hope he either pulls through or has an easy passage past his nine lives

so very sorry

my own cat has a minor illness this week and I know how bad that made me feel

Cats have tough metabolisms. Now that thing is drained, his chances are much better.

Another useful thing to remember is that proprietary cat milk, with a spoon of sugar dissolved in it.

They can't taste it but will still get energy - Again, my old one benefited from that when he was unable to eat.

Finger's crossed..... it's suprising how quickly cats will recover once an abcess has been lanced & they've got some anti-bio...

... really suprised the vet didn't spot this earlier.... most cat owners would have said 'abcess' when you described the syptoms... :hmm:

Try to get hime to drink some water...

(((Scaredy)))

indeed, i'm a bit annoyed at what seems to have been a rather lackadaisical examination on monday tbh. when it didn't go down, we were thinking tumour so i suppose that's one thing to cling onto.

missus said no milk cos it might interfere with antibios.

but, it does look like your point about tough metabolisms is true, we've got back after he'd been asleep for a few hours and he woke up, yawned and stretched, and has munched on some biscuits and chicken :)

half his head is a total car crash, made me feel well squeamish, but the good thing is it doesn't seem to have swollen up again so far and he's walking around with his tail up and rubbing his gory scar against corners in a masochistic way....um, hooray i hope *smiles cautiously* :)

The propriatary stuff is not exactly milk - it is a low lactose substance that cats, find very easy to digest. Especially old/unwell animals. In his last few years, old BD derived much of his food value from the stuff.

Yup, tough as old boots! :D

Yes, this is another thing they do to get wounds to drain. Again, one night I found old BD doing something similar & later came through to find he had dealt with a missed abcess on his shoulder by bursting it & leaving a nice long pussy/bloody streak at cat-shoulder height, all round the kitchen - incl cooker, fridge, sink & washing machine. ICK!

Anyway, great to see he is eating again. :)

Great news! Healing squeaks from Gethin and Celyn Guinea Pig (Gethin especially likes cats. Probably shouldn't considering his place on the food chain, but there you go!:D )
