Cats and wooden floors

Floors? of course not, don't be so daft. They've got a brand new £1000 sofa to sharpen their claws on!!!!!

door-frames, posts, wooden doors even: cats scratch them. But floors? no.
Door frames and doors are naturally attractive to cats, it's not the material but the positioning - as they are at the entrance to a room or the house it is natural for them to want to scratch it to mark their territory, the paws have plentiful scent glands and the act of scratching makes sure their scent impregnates the wood leaving both strong scent and visual signals of ownership. Carpets are more likely to be scratched at the entrance to rooms for the same reason.

If you have trouble with your cat going for the door frames, try a tall scratching post next to the entrance, the sisal bound post will be more attractive to them than wood, and the positioning suits the purpose of the scratching.
