He was anti state. Tolstoy and many others studied and wrote about Jesus as an anarchist.
As for Paul....Tolstoy and Hennecy and others would say he "spoiled" the true message by mixing it with allegiance to state. Don't forget he was a soldier for most of his life and he was used to a level of obedience. He was not anti state in the way Jesus was.
One thing is absolutely certain. The Roman Catholic church and other Christian churches, their followers, their hierarchy, priests, bishops cardinals and popes have been very far removed from the message and will of Christ.

I remember pointing this out to my headmaster in school along with the notion he had long hair (He was trying to get me and my hippy m8`s to cut our hair). He actually said `Jesus was a ruffian, turning over the marketplace` , and I don`t think he was an Jewish ! The mind boggles .

One of the biggest problems now is the fact that religious orders are very slow to compensate the victims of abuse. It's almost as if they're hanging onto their extreme wealth and waiting it out for the victims to die off....despicable behaviour.
I think pope Francis wants change and is trying to make change happen but he's up against the Vatican Curia and they've a habit of delaying and opposing progressives and opposing change. They're capable of doing anything to stop progress. Probably why pope Frances won't live in the papal apartments in the Vatican.
