Cash Tube fares to rise to £4

of course youre right, the queus at the station are all in my imagination

have you ever lived on the dole, how many people on low incomes can risk sticking 5 or 10 quid on a card if they might not use it before the next giro

lots of people live hand to mouth
I'm not denying the queues exist, but how do you know how much people are putting on them, do you wait there spying on each person?

And If you're fed up of queueing there are plenty of other places nearby which you can top up at, as Kysr=er says.

Well, yes my mistake, but you get my point, right? Why can't you spend your last £5 when you've already given them a security deposit of £3 (or, in my case, £5)?!
Yes, I do get your point :)

The £5 auto-top up rule is for your convenience though, isn't it? It's to prevent you running out of credit and having to remember to top it up manually. It is up to the individual user as to whether or not they choose to take advantage of this feature. I think it can be useful, and I'd rather the option be available than not.

In theory though, if the auto-top up works on ANY oyster reader, then there is no need to hold the £5 reserve, because in theory when you hit £0, it'll top you up.

The only need to hold the £5 reserve would be a 'fail safe' in case the auto top up didn't work, so you don't get left with no money for a fare.

Or alternatively, if not all oyster readers could credit you with the £20. This used to be the case (when it didn't work on buses) and I wonder if the £5 reserve credit is just a hangover from this.

I really can't believe I'm still talking about oystercards
:o
