It's also extremely unlikely that in places like Syria and Lebanon, that any of these demonstrations took place without the go-ahead of the Syrian security services. Conceivably their motivation, given that they have no greater love for Islamic crazies than any other government in that part of the world, was to impress upon the US that if they invade Syria, they'd be up to their arse in suicide bombers just as they are in Iraq. Whatever their motivations, and this seems equally likely to be true of Egypt and Libya, it's rather unlikely that this was simply a spontaneous expression of popular feeling.

On the other hand Bernie it's pretty likely that it was spontaneous but that (a) the state-controlled media gave a certain impression to the population ; (b) the security services allowed the population to express these feelings.

One-sided media propaganda is perfectly capable of producing lynch-mob demonstrations in this country: no reason why it shouldn't be the same in Syria. (Although Lebanon's a bit different, no?)

Sure, but especially in Syria and the parts of Lebanon they control, the security services had to be in on it. Otherwise the demonstrators would have been dead or arrested and having their private parts connected to the mains.

thanks for reading and responding to my rants....guess I do sound alarmist but I do really think this society under the pretext of being all things to all people and 'protecting' us all from offense or from 'damaged health' etc can only be the beginning of a sinister path to a a future with some similiraties of Orwell's nightmare vision.

Coming back to the 'Nazism' I guess I regret using that emotive word. But do you remember Goebels? he was the one whos said 'yes it's only a lie '
(referring to the hateful propaganda against Jewish people)'But if you repeat a lie enough times , it becomes the truth'.

Witness the lies about Iraq and think how many 'free thinking people ' were taken in by it and how many honest journalists etc were scapegoated.
There is bad science around and selected stats are used to drive a politically motivated campaign re: smoking .

Coming back to Bernie about the west 'caving in' I do stand by this , I do think that our great government has capitulated to religious fanatics and foresaken freedom of speech, cartoon war aside , do you remember the Sikh outrage at a play written by a female British Sikh playwright ? it happened last year , a scene was set in the play were there was a rape in the temple. The fanatics surrounded the theatre and insisted it did not proceed to show the play , one fanatic actually threw a brick at the theatre: the result the theatre company had to capitulate and stop the play ,but the protesters that acted like hooliganss apparantly were let off.
Had they been anti capitalist protesters they porbably would have been hanged and flogged!
If that's not another sign supporting my main argument well I give in and everything is rosy , we live in a society that is generally tolerant but some belliefs which it has tolerated have been aloud to express the intolerance intrinsic to their doctrines to degree that self serving polilticians have permitted to cause mayhem.

The cartoons .......does freedom of speech mean that they should or should not have been published in Britain?

Is freedom of speech a contradiction in terms if we are free to say A but refrain from saying B because group C find this offensive ?


Does the fact that a particular religion has a taboo about depicting a par ticular person ( even in the most positive light ) , mean that a society which has principles of freedom of speech must succumb to the religious code which is not its rulilng principle or, to reject the demands made in the name of upholding its own values?...........

This is a serious debate .........people are still dying because of the outrage
