Carter USM - new reunion gigs!

The venue looks great and has real atmosphere.

The sound can be a problem if you're not in the right place: so move :p

I've always found it almost spacious compared with somewhere like the fucking Empire, where you're so jammed in you can't move.

And name me a big venue in London where the beer ISN'T piss?

I'll give you the first point.

I've not found a place yet where the sound is much cop, where would you recommend?

Perhaps I just don't like crowds - a MAJOR failing for a live music fan.

Finally, can't off the top of my head.

The sound is the most important factor though. I've had enough gigs spoilt by shit sound to not want to bother anymore.

The sound's usually fine if you're fairly central, it's the shape of the venue. A lot of bands do fuck up - they'll realise they need to boost the PA at the Academy compared with other dates on a tour and may not do a great job of it. But it's rarely that bad if you pick a decent spot

Well I've stood near the front on the right and central towards the rear and both times the sound was shit.

I doubt I'll ever go there again tbh.

But bad sound happens everywhere - the Astoria can be well ropey, the Empire too... Big venues generally just don't have great sound, it's not peculiar to the Academy

Maybe you were just unlucky? I've been there literally dozens of times and only rarely been pissed off with it. Half the time, as I say, it's the band not sorting it out properly rather then the venue - the sound there CAN be excellent

I honestly think it's worse at the Academy more often than anywhere else. All venues have their off days and their bad spots to get stuck in, but the Academy just seems far more consistently bad.

The only worse venues IME are hangars like Earls Court or Wembley Arena.

Which is a damn shame, cos if they could sort the sound out I could forgive the rest quite cheerfully.

Did you see Mogwai there? Anyone at that gig would realise the venue can have great sound, if acts would just sort it out

I didn't, sadly. I saw them at the Royal Albert Hall once though, and that raised the standard for sound quality at gigs to a high I don't think I'll see again!

So we're agreed,then? The venue isn't the problem :p

*kills el geoff*

Alright smart arse, but the fact remains that it's a pot luck venue innit. That it is an aspect of the venue itself that leads to far too many of the bands not getting it right.

At the prices they charge for tickets, beer and merch, the CARLING Academy Brixton (let's get the name of this corporate carbunkle correct, please!), should NOT be a pot luck venue in terms of sound and customer service.

According the the Carter website forum, the Brixton show is about to sell out - only 100 tix remain.

Just thought I'd mention it in case anyone was intending to go.

EMF & someone else to support in London.

EMF & Vile Evils (ex pwei) to support in Birmingham.

Have you seen the Vile Evils, Onket? I wasn't impressed with the myspace stuff so i didn't follow it up. What do you reckon?

Also, EMF? ye gods.

Yeah, about 4 or 5 times I think. They are ok, nothing more. I did a thread at the time they started, I think.

Despite my reservations it would appear that I will be going to this gig as mates have sorted me a ticket and I'm not going to turn it down....

EMF? Fuck sake! Won't be in any rush to get there then.

Personally I'd get there early enough to see EMF- I wanted to see them at the Scala before Christmas but didn't.

Birmingham was pretty good. Vileevils were ok, EMF played the one song I remember & Carter were very good again.

Had an email from the Carter mailing list the other day & I reckon this'll make a few people laugh-

Jim Bob and I are still to sit down over a cup of coffee to decide if we will do it again next year.

:D

Heh :D

Decided not to go again this year as the tickets were quite pricey but I really wish I had. Will have to compensate with Battitude at the Windmill in December

Have you got tickets? I think it'd down to Fruitbat's personal reserve list as I've sold all the tickets they asked me to.
Hope so, as then you will get to see Screaming Tea Party.

I trundled along to the Brixton gig last week... I did enjoy it, but not hugely.

Last year it had been many years since I had last had the pleasure of jumping around like a loon to all my old Carter faves. This time round the gap had only been 12 months. It didn't really seem necessary for me to be there once again - the nostalgic buzz that I got previously was a bit muted this time and I couldn't help but come to the conclusion that Carter are actually a bit shit.

Jimbob and Fruitbat dropped many hints that they would be back again next year but I certainly won't. I think I'll file now permanently file them under 'Done and Dusted'.
