Carrying stuff when cycling

I use my 30ltr standard rucksack generally, but when I do a proper shop, I use my 65ltr rucksack which cost about 50 quid to fill to the top, so I never do.

I find I don't have a problem with either. The Deuter as air strips to stop by back getting sweaty.

Panniers all the way. Also a trailer for larger items (like the kids:D )
I use a trailer too when I have to transport kids - much preferable to a child seat on the back since I don't need to worry so much about crashing and the kid hitting the road. BUT with the trailer I'm always worried about cars driving into it

I've been looking at bikes with racks on, when cycling to work in the morning, and I have to say, I think they look a bit crap on mountain bikes. I don't think I am going to bother.

I carry one of these

Most rear racks I see are on mountain bikes or ATB's and they look fine. I'm liking having a rack instead of carrying a bag of some kind on my back.

Yeh, a back rack is just common sense really... Its like the boot of a car... Panniers are just great for carrying your life around without sweaty back syndrome... some panniers are o big though.. 35 litre monsters, that cause a heap of drag on a windy day..

You are clearly not of the Bauhaus or Le Corbusier schools of design - putting arbitrary aesthetic prejudice ahead of practicality (and to a certain degree, safety).
(or summat loike that)
The place for luggage is on the bike, not the rider.:p

When I was i germany I saw some really ingenious baskets and trailers at the G8 camp.

THis is a cut up shopping trolley which is then fitted to the back of the bike. I'd imagine it's quite heavy but I fell in love :o

or for a more low-fi version just use a wooden crate :D

I've got a rack on my dutch bike and a front basket but I need to fis it before it's ridable.

I want a really big whicker basket (I suppose like a butchers or bakers) for the front so I can put the dog in it but I can't seem to find one anywhere :(

'kinhell that shopping trolley contraption must weigh a tonne!

Actually maybe shopping trolleys are only so heavy cos of the wheels and stuff?

 though. :)
