Carnival Magic Moments

i'd like to be at the carnival this year. only been once, and my mates made me leave early 'cause they got scared of all the crowds. :(

aba shanti is on sundays these days no (as well as mondays)? definitely was last year and possibly the year before if the old grey cells serve me right. i intend to go on sunday, aba shanti all the day long anyhow. if anyone can confirm that sunday that would be great.

my old mate from school days goes to mastermind and stands by the supermalt stand both sunday and monday, so i always make a quick trip to see him :) we'll miss you ernesto :P

KCC Soundsystem - 1997

UK Garage was in full flow that year - the skies were overcast and grey, but being dropped was a beautiful moment.

From the Aba site: NOTTING HILL CARNIVAL 2010
ABA SHANTI I SOUND SYSTEM. SOUNDS OF JAH LIGHTNING AND THUNDER.
REVIVAL SUNDAY 29th AUGUST 2010 & DUBPLATE MONDAY 30th 2010
so yeah, Sunday is now a regular fixture...

my old band got to play on the Gaz's Rocking Blues stage a few years ago. enjoyed that!
been wanting to check out GRB at carnival but never managed it, despite heading off into the crowd with good intentions a couple of times - been to the soho spot a couple of times.

only time i had fun at notting hill was when i went on my own with rum and weed and stayed at channel one for four hours til the rum was gone.
i have many great childhood memories of leeds carnival though

it's worth a look :) ...they always have a big crazy stage set and the music's a bit more mellow than elsewhere (old ska etc - well, basically just like the club night...)

there is a little museum of Gaz's stuff under the subway on Edgeware rd too, for some reason...

Will there be any good hard house/breakbeat this year?

The only soudsystem I enjoyed when I went last time was the Pineapple Tribe lot - all the others I saw were pretty boring.

There's never any good hard house or breakbeat anywhere. It's an oxymoron like

Notting Hill isn't trying to be everything to all people, nor should it be imo. Calling the huge variety of soundsystems on offer 'boring' seems more than a little self limiting tbh.

I meant boring to me. I'm not a big fan of ragga or dancehall much. I was just after few pointers to any alternative stuff happening is all.

You realise that only a small proportion of rigs there play anything approaching 'ragga or dancehall'. There's massive variety, not that hard house or breakbeat are particularly progressive or varied. See aforementioned hints towards CMC, Gaz's, Aba Shanti etc.

You'll be complaining about the lack of trance at the Mela next

Closest you might get is from Sancho Panza.

yeah theres sancho panza (which last year was so completely rammed it got scary - i was trying to go through and it took ages), and there used to be the Pineapple Tribe thing, they would get a bit ravey but I think that may have been given the boot - they used to set up where aba shanti is on the sunday, but now Aba is doing both days I think they got scratched.

Random sounds was a free party rig that set up in someones front garden at Notting Hill

Yes, it was a good little out of the way spot but you had to know they were there as it wasn't in the official programme - always enjoyed them as there were other party people you knew.

Pineapple Tribe are good and last year I came across a rig in a spot somewhere near the canal in the Harrow Road area, don't know what they were called but I enjoyed music I heard there.

I enjoy CMC Matrix when they are playing D&B but I have to move when the MC's come on - they are too loud for me and they overpower the music (I don't like MCing at the best of times!)

Personally, I don't like the big crowd areas so I try to find an interesting slightly out of the way spot at Carnival.
