Carew Cricket Club (Pembroke CC League): Wankers!

It is a weird fudge. There are five divisions in total. Demotion doesn't go far enough. I I'd have shoved them to the bottom wit the social teams.

I think it's quite Solomonesque. They've let them keep their win, for all it's worth to them - forever they'll be known for winning it in dubious circumstances, so it'll almost be a mark of shame. Meanwhile, they're nicely hobbled a bit for next year, and I imagine £300 out of a local cricket club's finances is big enough to hurt.

£300 is nothing really in the scheme of most clubs finances, certainly ones that are running two league teams. And as for being hobbled - being demoted one division is hardly anything, teams get promoted and relegated all the time as players come and go. In fact if they can keep hold of most of their players they'll probably have a fun season and win both divisions easily.

You're right that the mark of shame is on them, that being said though they are going to be hated regardless now so I'd have some fun with it and embrace it Millwall style. I'd wear my winners medal to every match next season.

What a bizarre fudge.

Well, its not technically against the rules we think but its not really odd and you've embarrassed the league in the national press, er, I dunno lets just make something up.

Hahaha. Only in cricket administration. Total sense the 2ndXI gets punished for something they had nothing to do with.

Shambles.

This is why I'd have shoved them down to div 5. See how much fun it is when it's a non contest every week. And take the at least four years to put it right.

Is that fair on lower divisions?
Knowing they are likely to get stuffed so that promotion place / championship victory that was maybe possible is now most likely already in Carew's back pocket.

You have a point. Flip side of that would be a chance to test yourselves against higher quality opposition.

Their best players would join other clubs so they'd drop a div or two in quality anyway.

I honestly don't see them losing many players. They have a lot of long serving players and players with long-held family connections to the club. They will walk division 2 next season as the difference in quality is massive. Their seconds may have a slightly harder job in division 3 but again there is a big difference in quality, so they will almost certainly get promoted.
The depth of quality in Pembrokeshire has plummeted over the years. In the last few years I've seen bowlers in divisions 2 and 3 who were maybe the fifth bowler 10 years ago, when I played against them, now opening the bowling or first change. Likewise, batsmen who now score twice as many runs as they did. They haven't improved (certainly not by that degree), the standard has fallen along with the number of clubs in Pembrokeshire and the number of teams they field. The good teams tend to mop up nearly all the best young players by the time they've reached the age of 18, meaning the standard below the top tier hasn't just stagnated but has steadily fallen since the mid-90's.
