Careers advice for adults

Where does one go to get this? I went into the jobcentre and they were fucking useless, they gave me the number for connexions but connexions deal with youth careers advice AFAIK. Obviously there's learn direct but again it's not quite what i'm after, I want a similar thing to what you had at school, I wanna go in, chat, go on a couple of computer programes etc, so does anyone have any idea of where i'd go for this? and it has to be free too :)

I'm not sure there's anything statutory for adults who want more 'proper' jobs than job centres offer.

I think there are private career consultant type people who might do this sort of thing. Maybe this site would be a start? http://www.careerconsultants.co.uk/ (just googled it)

For having a chat and a go on a couple of computer programmes you might actually be best going to a recruitment consultants. one that will want to test your comp skills and they might let you have a play on the applications if their nice. Y ou can take in your CV and tell them what you'd like and they'll tell you where they think they can sell you. Then just don't sign up. It's all I can think of.

I'm not sure if this is the norm in every local college, but where i work, when i'm not being a student myself, has a 'student services'. Dont let the name put you off, because you dont need to be a student to use the services, and careers advisors are on hand during the week and even over the summer holidays to chat to anyone with career queries. It might be worth phoning your local college, or even university to enquire about their student services and the facilities they offer.

Edited to add: if your local college offers night classes, or part-time courses designed towards adults then it's increasingly more likely that you will be able to get careers advice from then, even without being enrolled on a course.

Edited again: Infact the place where i work may even give you advice over the phone.

Hi Smoky, I went to my local connexions, and asked if they could do anything to help me with careers guidance. They let me in and we had a chat and they offered the use of the computer programs etc. Quite good as they are fairly quiet during the day. It is a shame there is very little out there once you're over 24/25. Surely they must realise that not everyone is in gainfull full time employment that they really really enjoy? Afer all we pay or taxes to fund things like connexions so should be able to use their facilities
