car insurance - daylight robbery!

what model is the mini?

Try herts insuance company (HIC) Adrian Flux or Lancaster and join a car owners club like national mini owners or british mini club (dunno where you are but a local mini club should do it as well) and you'll get 10% off your premiums.

Mini's are
  • easy to nick
  • rubbish in crashes
  • best cars on the road ;)

so that'll make your premium hire than an average car :D

How many miles a year are you gonna travel a year? Could be worth getting limited mileage,

I recently got quotes for a 1.4 VW Polo and that was 320 for full comp in Hackney. 280 for tpft. That was Elephant who have been consistently the cheapest for quite a while now. 7 year no claims.

Is the gov fighting a hidden war round your parts?
I think they must be :D

i used to use elephant insurance when i lived in birmingham. since moving to the sticks i can get an even better deal. 240 quid a year for a 1.4 VW polo with 4 named drivers on it.

You do know that your quoted premiums have fuck all to do with the car and more to do with this:

I'm male, 20 and have had a licence for 3 years.

You're in the highest risk group for having any type of accident - you're paying for your peers irresponsible behaviour, not the car itself.

a fine and what, 8 points on your licence?

I imagine that the kind of scum who don't feel that it's necessary to get insurance for their vehicle are also the kind of slime who haven't bothered with a licence either.

I pay £1150 on a 1.9 Diesel :(

That is a fucking lot isnt it......third party f&t as well.

that's enormous, do you shop around at all? i could have got it about £80 cheaper than the £350 i paid (8 years no claim, 1.4 corsa - in clapton) but it was a hassle to change at the time as i was goingon holiday and needed to get something from my current insurance company (who wouldn't budge on price when i asked them too:mad: ) and didn't have the time to do so, next year i'll be more organised, left it to the last minute this year tbh

Why didn't you just do it online?

Mate advised me to try moneysupermarket.com, pump in your details and you get a page of comparisons.
That's how I got mine this year.

Oh, and if anyone is interested in saving that extra £1 phone Churchill with the price of your lowest quote and they'll give you insurance for £1 less :D

I didn't phone them coz I renewed at midnight on Sunday(so I didn't forget the next day). Don't think their lines were open then.

Yup, I'm 24, been driving for 5 years and still have to pay more for my insurance than I did for the car. Even with a staff discount :(

It is isnt it......I'll have a little look around now, I remember it being to do with not having any no claims (due to my car getting fucking nicked  ) and living in a high crime area.

i did look on-line, but when you switch insurers you still need to get a letter from your current insurers confirming no claims information, etc, my insurance was running out, I was off on holiday so I didn't have time to get it sorted:(

Just got a quote for £380!!!!

Cheers everyone, gonna change it now. The motherfucking skanking bastardfucks

Not for a long time IME. They can now do all that from a database when you call. Sometimes they will ask you to send in a copy of your current renewal papers & driving licence for confirmation. Not had a problem getting short notice cover in years. :)

right, i remember that next time, i switched 2 years ago and had this problem

You must have been with one of the very last companies not linked-up. I've not had to get details for a lot longer than that.

It's hardly your insurer's fault that you couldn't be bothered getting competitive quotes.

Oh do fuck off. Competitive pricing is small differences, rip off pricing relying upon consumer trust / laziness is the work of cunts.

im being given an old clapped out mini by a relative who no longer wants it so i've been shopping for insurance. cheapest i can find is £82 quid a month and thats with a £500 excess. the fucking car isn't even worth that, its worth about 300 quid if that.

i've had a licence for 3 years, been driving on my parents insurance as a named driver though so i don't have any no claims.

'kin 'ell. Back in 1995, when I was 17, my first car was an elderly Mini. It only cost me £450 to insure it for a year - and older friends of mine then said that was expensive. I knew one bloke who'd insured a 1300 Astra a few years before me for £250. How times change.

Tbh, much as I like cars, I've not owned one for ten years and I don't feel as if I'm missing out on much.

After I lost my full no claims (wheels stolen) the best quote I could get on my XR4x4 was £3200 third party only.

I got rid of the car. Oh well, it didn't run anyway.

I loved that car :(

Guess what I got asked for in a letter today, and guess what went on the fire at the beginning of the week :D
I'll phone them later

You have to play with insurance brokers.
I posted this elsewhere in an attempt to get people to realise that insurance brokers take the piss and will always try to go with the policy that makes them the most money...

So, check this out...

I received my renewal notice for my Honda Blackbird from Carole Nash...
Zenith insurance €756 (No Pillion)
Royal & sun alliance €987 with pillion cover.
So... phoned Carole Nash and the conversation went something like this...

Jenny - Hi, Carole Nash, Jenny speaking, could I take your name please

Me - Certainly, it's Dr Herbz

Jenny - Hi, Doc, you're gonna be recorded, how can I help you?

Me - I have my renewal notice here, you've quoted me €756 through Zenith with no pillion but I think I may be carrying a pillion this year and I'd also like another bike added to my policy (which the Zenith policy didn't allow).

Jenny - Well the Quote we gave you from Royal & sun alliance does allow you to carry a pillion.

Me - Could you give me a price for both bikes then please with pillion cover?

Jenny - Certainly, what's the other bike?

Me - It's a 1995 Suzuki GSX 1100F

Jenny - We can cover both bikes for €1194.

Me - I think you need to sharpen your pencil a bit because AON just quoted me €850 for both bikes and the same cover you're charging me €1194 for. (I lied, AON wouldn't quote me for the Blackbird because it wasn't standard so I pulled a figure out of my head)

Jenny - OK, let me just phone Royal & sun alliance and see if I can get a lower quote for you - I'll just put you on hold... (25 seconds pass) Sorry for the delay (?) I've spoken with Royal & sun alliance and we can't beat the price AON quoted you but we can get the price down to €884.

Me - OK, thanks, Jenny, I'll get back to you later today... see ya.

An hour passes and I phone them back...

Sean - Hi, Carole Nash, Sean speaking, could I take your name please

Me - Certainly, it's Dr Herbz.

Sean - Hi, Doc, you're gonna be recorded, how can I help you?

Me - Hi, Sean, I was given a quote earlier today for both my bikes and was wondering if you could find anything cheaper because I've had a considerably cheaper quote elsewhere?

Sean - OK, do you have a reference number for your Carole Nash quote?

Me - 12345678

Sean - OK, Doc, how much were you quoted and from who?

Me - I've just got off the phone with Quinn Direct who I insure my car through, they've just started doing bike insurance and have quoted me €640 for both bikes with the same cover you've quoted me €884 for. Is this the absolute lowest quote you can give me? (OK, I lied again (again), Quinn Direct wouldn't quote me on the Blackbird either)

Sean - I'll contact Royal & sun alliance and see what I can do for you, can I just put you on hold?

Me - Course you can, Sean.

5 minutes pass...

Sean - Hi, Doc... I've just got off the phone with Royal & sun alliance and we can't beat your quote from Quinn Direct but we can cover both bikes for €680.

Me - well, for the sake of a few euros, it's hardly worth moving elsewhere, would you like my credit card details?

Sean - Your documents will be in the post tomorrow, thanks for using Carole Nash and thanks for using your brain and refusing to be shafted up the ass.

Me - See Ya!

Bit of a difference... €1194 to €680 in two easy phone calls but there's also a knock-on effect because next year, instead of maybe around €900+ (if I had accepted the €1194 quote this time) it should be cheaper than €680 so I've potentially saved thousands by making two phone calls!

Phone around, it's worth it.

Quinn Direct have been really cheap for me, I have a P-reg Peugot 306 1.9 turbo diesel, it is insured 3rd party fire and theft for £18.99 a month
