Can't get old sofas out of house

We have a large 3 seat sofa and had to take it into this house through the back door.

Is the back door somehow bigger than the front? :hmm:

I've got a three seat sofa but never had any trouble getting stuff in or out.

Either the sofas are, like gigantic or Geri's doors are a bit narrow.
:hmm:

Yes, our current back door is much larger than the front and also it was a straight carry through the kitchen and its door straight into the living room.

The front door would have required us to do a 90deg change of direction with the sofa as soon as we got it into the front door.

The house someone I know is moving into has a porch so little chance of their getting their large sofa through that but one of the front windows opens wide and we expect to stuff the sofa through that.

The sofas are not gigantic - this is what I can't understand, I've had bigger sofas and got them in and out no trouble, but that was when I had a bog standard wooden front door.

The uPVC door I have now is wider in itself and the frame makes the gap smaller.

I really don't think the new ones are going to get in, and as they were specially ordered I'm worried that they will make me pay for them even if I don't have them. :(

I don't mind losing the deposit but I can't afford to pay £700 for something I'm not going to use.

if the furniture shop is anything like the one i worked in, if you cant fit the sofas in then they'll only give you an 80% refund on the cost of the sofas, though seeing as you seem to have only put a deposit down, i expect they may just nick your deposit. in my place, everything was to be paid for up front though and the amount of people who hadnt measured the sofas and whether they'd fit through the door was ridiculous. if they begged hard enough we'd just give them a full refund and keep the made to order sofas in our main warehouse until someone ordered the same one and we'd send it out without them havin to wait for another to be made.

On some sofas you can take the arms off. I know furniture village offered to do that for ours if they didn't fit.

No offence but didn't you think to measure before you ordered them?

It says on the terms and conditions that I am responsible for ensuring they can get in (fair enough). If customers don't like the sofas they can be returned, subject to a 20% re-stokcing fee if I re-order from them. I can cope with this, I guess - since it is my fault after all. I just can't really afford it right now having had to pay for my new bike (insurance won't cover all of it) and my holiday a week on Monday (have to pay balance in full when I get there).

It just seems like everything is going wrong all at once.

Sounds pretty pathetic.

What are they going to do if they cannot get the new sofas into the house? take them away again or leave them out in the rain ?

Happened to me - DFS - I ordered a 2 seater and 3 seater - the 2 seater got in OK but they couldn't get the 3 seater in - I told them to leave it and I'll sign for it as me & my mates were sure that with the padding and stuff removed we could get it in but they refused to leave it and let me sign for it, saying it was their responsibility until it was in my flat. They ended up taking it away and then trying to get me to pay - I refused as they had already said it was their responsibility until it was in my flat - I offered to absolve them of responsibility by signing for it and letting them leave it outside :hmm:

are the new sofas detachable in anyway?
the legs? can you move them?

Is it worth getting a removals company involved to help?

They usually have experience in getting large items in and out of places, including hoisting things through windows.

This might cost - but it's not like they're helping many people move house at the moment is it? - but could save you the £700.

No, because I thought they were roughly the same size as my old ones (which they are) and even if I had measured them, I would have just measured my old ones which came in easily (forgetting as I had that the door was now different).

I know it's my own fault but it still leaves me with the problem.

I might be getting ahead of myself - it might be fine, we'll just have to wait and see.

Update - sofas won't fit in, even with door taken off (which they did without even being asked to and seems to be a piece of piss) BUT they reckon they will fit through the window, so they've taken them back and I have to get a quote from a glazier - should be about £80 or so. Which is better than losing 20% for their "re-stocking" fee.

Ah well - might have to wait a few weeks until after my holiday as I can't be doing with it all just before going away.

Shit, what a nightmare.

My friend had to have her sofas put through her lounge window in a first floor flat because her lounge is right next to her sons bedroom and at a funny angle so you can barely get anything through there.

That's partly the problem in my house - there is a wall right by the door, so you can't manoeuvre them around it.

I'm actually quite relieved now as the stress of waiting for them to come and not knowing what would happen was making me feel sick.

Pathetic I know. :o

I don't think your feelings are pathetic at all tbh. You bought a new thing, had the benefit of feeling excited/good then realised it was a bit pear shaped!

Hope the glazier thing works out. My pal, who's here just now, said his mum had to get an upholsterer to take her sofa to bits in the street and he rebuilt it in the house, so that might be worth checking out :)

Even a double glazed one with locking pins or whatever they are called?
They normally sit on hinges like pegs - you swing 'em open and lift 'em off.

It's a good trick to do with people's front doors - you can see their faces as they see the thing that they regard as all that stands between them and the Evil World Outside hoicked off its hinges and leaning up against a wall :D

I am mean, sometimes...

I know they will come out once the door is off, because they came in. If it comes to it I can smash them up, but I was going to give them away. It also doesn't solve the problem of getting the new ones in (no idea what size they are!)

Anyway I phoned up the door company and they said it would come off easily enough but I *might* have problems getting it to lock, if the pins aren't straight and they would have to come out and line them up for about £70.
:hmm: I suppose they might want to cover their arses if your door is marginal for adjustment and whipping it off and back on to the pegs results in some slight settling, but...

Oh, I dunno. Tell you what - try and make sure you've got someone around at the time who looks knowledgeable and can brandish a screwdriver with authority, because that arse-covering exercise could so easily turn into a "let's roll the lady over for £70 worth of beer money".

I hope I am being excessively cynical. Unless your door was incredibly shonky, even if it didn't go on quite as well as it came off, it should only be a 5 or 10 minute tweaking job.

ETA: ah. Missed the boat.

They are not insured. If they accidentaly dropped said door and injured themselves they'd be fucked, no cover for time of work or injury etc. It's not pathetic.

If they have to take the sofas away again that counts as a fail, and usually counts against the driver. When I worked delivering for argos they'd lose the weeks bonus for more than 3 Fails. The things which counted as fails that were the drivers fault were lack of acsess, customer changing mind and other things beyond the drivers control

Well, the lack of insurance didn't seem to bother him, he just whipped it off before I had a chance to say anything. It looks so simple I think I could probably have done it myself.

Yes it is, they are delivering sofas, and that often means a door has to be taken off its hinges. They should be insured to do that!
