They certainly certainly did. Many Scots had been emigrating (often forced) before Culloden but those numbers increased dramatically afterwards. This process of clearing the Highlands lasted until about 1830.

A fair number of them settled in my neighbourhood. They were the first "white men" into this area. The stories of their settling is taught in our school.

Here's one -> The area was covered in trees and the scots hadn't seen trees of this size before. The Indians taught them how to make axes, helped clear the land and looked after them for the first couple of winters.

Around here, people still speak gaelic and courses are offered in town. More of my neighbours vacation in Scotland than the States.

Of course, Canadian Club whisky is actually based on a Scottish recipe. ;)

I'd be grateful if you'd use your own words rather than posting up pretty pictures in what is supposed to be a 'world politics/current affairs ' forum.
Thanks!

I was aware of the lyrics ban, but was unaware of a ban on posting images in p and p.

p.s. Editor: I note friedaweed's three images posted in this thread: no knuckle rapping for him?

As it ever was, everywhere: all are equal, but some more equal than others.

.

Proof of the saying "No good deed goes unpunished."

(Don't mind me, I've been in a puppy kicking mood for the last week.)

Sorry Ed couldn't resist it ;)
There might be inequality in image posting but you get away with posting a lot more shite :p

I didn't grass you; it appears that you're the one grassed me.

You're right; nobody likes a grass.

That's your style though and it's an indication of your inability to properly engage with others without the need to resort to cheap point scoring.

There were scottish people brought to canada in a condition akin to bondage, if not bondage outright.

doesn't stop you, in Vancouver, from posting in UK politics, does it?

Mab There is much controversy here. However said:
I would love to hear a logical argument as to why such a position is shite

I'm not going to of course, because there isn't such a logical argument.

I live in Ontario and am closer to Quebec than you, but I fail to see why your location has anything to do with having an opinion on the subject.

Am I missing something about this story, did the Supreme Court's ruling only apply to Quebec residents? I can't see that, somehow.

btw - you still haven't mentioned where you stand on the issue.

I am just getting back to this four years later and you have contradicted yourself on numerous occasions but I did not want to say anything because I thought it petty. Of course it makes a difference about location, our provinces all have different laws. Not only provinces, but local councils.

The legal blade length, is that for your schools, too?

I'm just curious because here all knives, regardless of blade length, are banned in schools. No weapons of any type and nothing that looks like a weapon.

Quebec ruled that the kirpans fall into the weapons category. Supreme Court overturned their decision and ruled them religious. End of story.

See see Peeper you believed that. There are no rules about knife blades in Canada and plus, I used to keep a hatchet in my locker in grade eight.

canadian born grandparent
not sure whether I could be a sikh though

Doesn't apply anymore. I tried that one a few years back and was told no. And I would like to be French Canadian as my first choice alternative nationality (or French)

It's not really about it being used as a weapon, it's more about it could be mistaken for a weapon. Nothing that looks like a weapon is allowed in the schools. This includes things like water guns.

The schools are a safe zone for children. In the city centers, there are fair number of children who have come here from countries with very violent cultures. Here, they hope to find peace. When they see weapons, they get flashbacks and their sense of safety is shaken.

We really are a pacifist country :o

Have you lost it man??? Canada is a nasty, part "redneck" country. I respect my parent's British "home country" so much more. Canada does not have the high degree of intelligence and compassion that UK have.

Tell you what, go out in the UK in a regional town on a Friday night, compare it to the Canadian equivalent and then talk to us about the average "high degree of intelligence and compassion".
