Damn!!! I was going to post that, but didn't because that would just set him off again.

Well, what is done is done.

Let's count how many posts he can make in a row!!!

I'd be grateful if you'd use your own words rather than posting up pretty pictures in what is supposed to be a 'world politics/current affairs ' forum.
Thanks!

Canada and Afghanistan

PM Harper just finished a two-day trip to Afghanistan where he met with President Hamid Karzai.

"Please convey to your people, to the people of Canada, the immense gratitude of the Afghan people for what your country, your people have done for us," he told Harper after an hour-long meeting.

"For giving the lives of your sons, for contributing in money, for contributing in soldiers and for being one of the biggest helpers in Afghanistan."

Harper's meeting with the Afghan leader marked the end of the prime minister's surprise two-day visit to the troubled country.

In a stark reminder of the instability that still threatens the country, the news conference at Karzai's president compound was interrupted for 30 seconds while U.S. helicopters swirled overhead to check security at the palace.

The setting was perhaps an unusual inaugural foreign meeting for the prime minister, but Harper has made it clear throughout the two-day visit that Afghanistan is a high priority for the Canadian government.

He came to boost morale among the 2,200 Canadian troops serving in the country, but also used the trip to send the message back home the mission is indispensable - and that the government is not backing down.

Karzai said Canadian financial aid in rebuilding has already gone a long way to helping the country economically.

source

We have committed ourselves to a ten year plan to help rebuild Afghanistan, but with 12 dead they is some opposition to us furfilling this promise.

Harper have invited Karzai to come and address the House of Parliment to explain why such a commitment is important to his country.

I'm proud of the work we are doing over there - feels good to be a Canadian.

(added this here because I didn't want to start a new thread, only Canadians really care about this issue and most of the Canadian U75er's have read this thread)

umm...I think there are people in other countries who care, or at the very least have some interest. but all the same, well done Canada

Johnny the golden rule of nicknaming is they have to be unique. You can't have everyone with the same nick it's just not right. Back to the drawing board for you boy. ;) I'll make it easy for you. The kids at school call me butch ;)

i presume the clearances also boosted the scots emigre population

They certainly certainly did. Many Scots had been emigrating (often forced) before Culloden but those numbers increased dramatically afterwards. This process of clearing the Highlands lasted until about 1830.

Spent some time in Knoydart this winter. There's an interesting tale to be told about those who settled there after the clearings. Wasn't it a priest who helped them get there? Some one in the old forge pub was telling us but i had had a few eighties by then ;)

True, not everyone was forced to emigrate before Culloden, but their lives weren't going to be any easier if they stayed on the land. The whole idea behind crofting was to get these folk off the land so that sheep could be grazed in their stead. The crofts that many were forced to live on often weren't arable and after much hardship some decided to move into the cities.

Yup. Those who settled in Knoydart must of had it hard. It's a bleak place. Pretty, but harsh in the winter
