Canada's science minister doesn't want to talk about evolution

They didn't ask him about creationalism (religion) they asked him about evolution (science).

Whether he believes in the theory or not he should still be able to discuss it as the Canadian representative for science.

If he believes his religious views prohibits him from discussing key scientific theories he should quite frankly resign.

If Canada are happy with a science minister who fundamentally misunderstands the concept of science -- and the only Canadian here seems happy enough with this fact -- who are we to argue?

Science minister is hardly a crucial position in either the government or the science community. What the fuck does a science minister actually do?

If you are soooo narrow minded that you can't see that someone can do a job regardless of their belief system, then so be it.

Glad I live in Canada - we don't descriminate and we don't hold people up to stereotypes.

And anyone not believing in this theory should be banned from sciences?
Anyone who examines the evidence and reaches a conclusion other than "all evidence points towards evolution in such a way that it is one of the most robust ideas in science" is not a scientist.

There is no place for a relativist position on this. The evidence is far too complete.

I'm glad that you live in Canada too. So we're both glad. Good for us.

Someone who follows scientific processes?

If he is capable of following scientific process, why is he unable to give his view on the theory of evolution (positive or negative), without referring to religion?

In what way are his views on evolution affected by his religious views?

So - let's say the government raised your taxes by 200%, and you asked a government representative why this was and what they were spending it on, you would be happy with the answer "I'm not going to answer that question. I am a Christian, and I don't think anybody asking a question about my religion is appropriate"? (Because to press him further would be to discriminate on the basis of his religion)

Go read the articles in the op - he is more than qualified.

So - you believe that only certain people with certain believes should be allow to fill certain jobs? Interesting!!!! Don't come to Canada - it's illegal to do that here.

Also, can you show me where not believing in evolution (iirc - he didn't answer the question), means that he can't do his job properly?

You're on a troll day, aren't you?

I prefer a Science Minister to have a grip on basic science.

Does your science minister believe studies in evolutionary science should get funding? This is my concern, and I'm guessing the concern of the scientific community. It concerns me that he decided to avoid answering the question.

They wouldn't actually have raised them by 200%, though.

That's just 'Maths', and the 'theory' of percentages.

Regardless of his religious convictions, he should be able to answer the question "what are your views on evolution?" In fact he can answer it, but won't. For that reason he should resign.

Why do I think?

He couldn't answer because it's politically incorrect.

If he had of answered in any other way, he would have lost his job.

Religion has no place in science.

We are a multicultural society - no religion is placed above another.

Those are off the top of my head - given time, I can come up with more reasons for him being evasive.

No clue!!!!

It's your thread.

You tell me.

S'possible, proprotionally, to raise taxes by 200% so long as the current rate is less than 33%.

In this case, cut funding to genome research projects.

As of March 31, 2008, Genome Canada has made funding commitments of $714 million and secured to date over $863 million from other public and private sources, in Canada and abroad for a total investment in genomics and proteomics research of $1.6 billion.

The public sector accounts for 83% of the funding, including the federal government, provincial governments, universities and hospital foundations. Funding sources are divided as follows:
Genome Canada: 46%
Provinces: 24%
Industry: 10%
Foreign: 7%
Federal departments and agencies: 6%
Institutions: 7%

http://www.genomecanada.ca/en/portfolio/co-funding.aspx

Federal is only 6% of their budget last year.

How much did the government cut?

Who got the money that Genome Canada wanted??

You ask a minister for an answer on religion and you expect him to resign because he won't answer it.

:D

Maybe we should fire our minister of transportation coz he won't answer questions on health care.

Right - can we just get this clear:

Do you think belief in the theory of evolution is a religious belief?
