What is a router?

It's the box that plugs into your phone line and your computer.

It's so called because it 'routes' the internet signals to the right computer (although in your case there's only one computer - the name makes more sense if there are multiple computers plugged into it)

You could port scan the network looking for hosts other than your devices. However, I think I probably lost you at about port. The easiest way to check is via your routers wireless config pages.
