Can someone recommend me a excellent reggae artist from the 70s

I'd go for Two Sevens Clash myself. Been listening to a lot of Niney the Observer recently, I missed him the first time around.

and I've just discovered the mighty "blood and fire" by Niney the Observer as a consequence of this thread, what albums do you recomend?

I cannot believe no one has mentioned Lee 'Scratch' Perry yet!

To be fair - if you listen to half of 70's reggae, you are probably listening to something of him.

I thought it was too obvious but I guess not :o
personally, I think he is overrated as a result of a disproportionate amount of exposure in the UK in the 80s/90s.

I like some of his stuff, the early stuff really, but can't be doing with the over-fiddly productions. It gets too noodly for my tastes

You gotta love Goosy and police and thieves...well I do :)

Yeah :)

Right now I'm mad for 'Herb Vendor' by Horsemouth Wallace (a L Perry production) and People Funny Boy

Anyway, I'd recommend the Trojan Anthology, Rebel Music.
And Mighty Diamonds, Right Time.
The Congos, Heart of the Congos.
And Burning Spear, Marcus Garvey.

If you could only have 4 roots LP's those would be a pretty good choice.

'Ole 'eap o' 70's roots in my latest in the Urbanites mixes thread above.

Better as a producer than a singer, Blood & Fire being an exception.

This compilation is excellent:

And then the LP's he produced for Dennis Brown and Sledeghammer Dub.

Horace Andy, if only for Skylarking (there's loads more imo), which is a riiiight tune.
