Can someone explain house?

[most women do not feel the need to obsessively know/list/collect/rant forth about music.[/QUOTE]

Betcha I can prove ya wrong. The fab thing about being 47 is that I was there.

Loved every musical mutation/genre dat grew outa punk/reggae/disco/hip-hop/house.

Now its more about re-cycleing beats and its hard to be totally original.

I wish I could understand why so many techno heads don't like house :(

There's barely any energy in it, like a depleted form of sound. It can be seductive though, I agree, depends on your chemical mood really.

Still, it's better then all them Garage derivatives that used to be around.

i'd challenge anyone who claims to dislike house music to go and see, say, doc martin, francois k or MAW djing and come away without having a cracking night...

Hmm - not sure that's the best idea. I mistakenly ended up at The Cross a good few years ago when MAW and Junior Sanchez were playing and had one of the worst nights possible. Appallingly poncey crowd, tiresome one paced music with no bollocks and lots of people doing that little passionless skippy dance for hours on end. Admittedly that was more Sanchez's 3 hour bore-a-thon set, but it was severely awful, soulless, pretentious nonsense.

Strange thing is that I like MAW in small doses, and I've had a good few top nights out to house, but I certainly wouldn't hold those guys as anywhere near special.

The only sorts of house music I find myself listening to voluntarily are the really ambient quiet kind with few or no beats (FSOL, KLF, Orb, AFX etc) and the dark, evil raw Acid sound of early 808 state and a few others.

None of that is the tedious bad kind of house though...
The "voluntarily" in your sentence speaks volumes :D

All of the above for me too

I used to have the time of my life at Indulge
So did I! Indulge was the business. Did you go in the early days in the arches at Loughborough Junction?

No, I know what Klezmer is.

What's the appeal??

:D

It's mad like a bag of badgers, and kind of 'grabs' you. I just don't really like being grabbed (not like that anyway ;) ) Plus if you're a forthright righteous jew you don't really have a choice in whether or not to like it!

i'm always puzzled by the fact 'i feel love' by donna summer set a perfect template but it took 10yrs for it catch on.
Bluestreak plays this song out, yet claims to dislike house.

Maybe the divide between House and techno/d'n'b is an age thing. When I first started going out and taking pills etc, House was the dominant (almost the only) genre. It tends to be younger people who prefer Techno and D'n'B beacuse they grew up on it.

Eh? No energy?! House do's are some of the best vibes I've been to! Sexy, funky, smiley music for sexy, funky, smiley people!

Bollocks, speed garage, 2-step, grime, dubstep etc all had/have some great tunes!

no energy no but soul yes....why is twitching to euphoria produced by a drum machine musically better, fun but not really my cup of.

so if one was to do a proper deep house night (not overly noodley though)with acceptable funky/soul/garage overtones in the brixton area with older folks who just like dancing....where might you start.....since demise of nights I have put on or been involved with such as for me the much missed dogmatique and come shake the whole I have not really been out.....I do fancy a night out though...

house music. the most consistently dull genre of music yet invented.

no that would be trance. thee most shit, generic, pavlovian genre of music ever invented.

and i don't know how anyone who even knows what 'garage' is can slag it off - knuckles; tears, phase 2; reachin, ce ce - someday, ten city... rovbert owens... some of the most amazing records ever!!

You know, in some ways you and I are profoundly different people.
