can i please start a french music thread.

My friends often tend to get a bit snobby and dismissive of my love for French pop music, still bringing up Plastic Bertrand (who was 30 years ago and who was meant to be funny) with a sense of smug superiority. Well they are fools, because they don't know what they are missing. ;) Over the last ten years especially a lot of really exciting French artists have been emerging.

Here some who are French or sing in French who I really like:

Another vote for Francoiz Breut, but I also really like her other half Dominique A., who writes many of her songs and who went from the minimal electro pop of La Fosette (check out the chilly Le Courage des Oiseuax) to the lush orchestral 60's style Tout Sera Comme Avant. His work with Yann Tiersen is also worth checking out. I also really like Alain Bashung's dark and moody Tel, which reminds me of Scott Walkers more recent stuff. Keren Ann is great, though she records more and more in English now. La Disparition and her last album Nolita are especially good. Katerine are lovely, though I don't know anything about them as are Crazy Curl.

Some older artist I still like to listen to are Lizzy Mercier Descloux (wose seminal album Mambo Nassau was a great influence on Talking Heads and who sadly died of cancer two years ago), Lio, The Honeymoon Killers, Hermine Demoriane and the fantastically deranged Les Rita Mitsouko, whose music is a mixture of ska and 30's style Cabaret music and who are still going strong after nearly 30 years.

Three pages in and no-ones mentioned the genius of Paulo Conte....he's french. Very French.

And back on the Brilliant Belgians thing - Millionaire. They're nang too.

Nouvelle Vague - check
Yann Tiersen - check
Charles Aznavour - think he's Algerian technically speaking but sings in French, so okay, check (ooh, check out an hilarious song of his called What Makes A Man A Man - a song about him being a female impersonator who lives with his Mum. 'She' is beautiful though!)

Criminally, no one has mentioned Air. And what about Etienne de Crecy? A bit of well-placed French house music never did anyone any harm! :)

i saw an utterly amazing french band last night - sincabeza - guitars, bass and drum - they sound like squarepusher, done live, with some french jazz thrown in...

no i dont much about them. please tell

Well, hes doing major bird in Lithuania ( I think, he may have been repatriated ) for manslaughter...

He accidentally killed his girlfriend, Marie Tringnant - daughter of the greatest acting family in France by knocking her down on a stone slab floor on a location shoot in E.Europe.

He didn't ring the police for 8 hours...

Its the French equivalent of Michael Hutchance, on drugs, killing Vanessa Redgrave.

Charles Trenet - La Mer; Y a de la joie; Boum; C'est si bon; Que reste-t-il nos amours?

Francois Lai - Un homme et une femme

and Gainsbourg - Je t'aime.

Je suis le Comte du Fromage. :o

This is well late, but mostly I've been watching Les Pistonflingeurs, Talku and Les Monty Pistons; sort of Madness meets The Cure Meets Glenn Miller.

Brigitte Fontaine

la linha imaginot and other good shit

somone's already mentioned occitan rappers Massillia Soundsystem but Fabulous Trobadours also deserve a mention- 'oc rap' with human beatbox and excellent lyrics- check out first LP 'era pas de faire' . also from Toulouse are Zebda- arab ska rap punk and 60s jazz chanteur Claude Nougaro.

Some others not mentioned and worth a listen

Nino Ferrer- mad 60s blues shouter with lots of songs about cornichons and the classic ballad 'Le Sud'

Magma- pyschedlic space rockers who sang in their own language

Berurier Noir- french Crass style punks

Louis Attaque- 100 mile an hour Brel angst (with violins)

shit does franch music only seem so much better when you're not there ?

When I was at school, the French student claimed to us that Jacques Brel died after using a vibrator in the bath. Is this true?

no no that was Claude Francoise or "Clo Clo'. writer of 'My Way' and purveyor of tres gay French disco.

or maybe not. but slightly more plausible

Manu Chao is technically French, isn't he??
He's the daddy.

:D

Check out his early career in Mano Negra - the Puta's Fever and Casa Babylon albums are astounding, IMO. The new Best of Mano Negra 'Out of Time' double DVD is wonderful too (just got it!)

I've been dead surprised by the amount of (quality) French musicians who want to know us (our club) on Myspace. I'll dig some of the best ones out and post them soon

:)
