Can anyone play guitar (or any instrument) or are some people jus never gonna get it?

Anyone can play any intrument (unless physically incapable of actually breathing, plucking, drawing a bow, hitting a key etc); not everyone can play an instrument well, and for many who can it's a developed skill, not a talent and so ultimately they will never be 'great' even tho they're technically good, and finally you've got people who are technically adept, have a feel for music (what I call the 'talent' - same applies to any artform, the ability to go beyond the simply playing of notes well and adding meaning and feeling to what's being played) who have the potential to be great musicians.

I always wanted to learn to dance and what I have learnt is I can dance...I'm just not sure I do it that well. Having said that, it's been amazing how much confidence it's given me and I find it easier to try other types of dancing, my co-ordinations better and my stamina's increase. So everything can have something good. I await your performance at Offline.

i think if there\s some kind of guitar music that you are really in to and think "i want to sound like that" it is a good start, because then you start practising to sound like that and then when you can do it something else occurs to yo uthat you want to sound like and it goes on like that

yeah, what kyser says - there is definately a difference between the technical side of playing and the musical side of playing, so if you've played other instruments before then it can be easier to learn a new instrument becuase you don't have to think as much about timing, rythmn, key, pitch etc.. as when you first learn an instrument.. there are a few people who can pick up any instrument and once they can make it make a noise they can play it reasonably well, becuase the musical end of it is so instinctive to them.

I'm pretty sure I'm incapable of picking up any instrument. I've never really tried, but I'm pretty sure.

Thing is, I'd like to try and I've seen a '£75 for guitar and amp and stuff' deal that'd be a nice Xmas present. (Stagg guitar, I thought Stagg made chilli. They probably do, for that price) Is there any point do you reckon? Can anyone pick up the basics, or for some is even that impossible, do you think?

I think anyone can pick up the basics. I think most people can become passable on it, with enough work. I don't think that many people will be inspired players. But it's that way with most things. If you play enough tennis, you can get pretty good, but not Wimbledon good.
