Camper vans again!

Old Mercs FTW, seriously. I know we're biased but ours has been a dream, they're reliable, sturdy, easy to run, just ace

There just aren't any, bizarrely!

Maybe there's a Merc drought on atm? I'll keep looking. :D

Cos it's summer. Buy one at the end of the sumer when people get home and the prices go down. And don't get a Sprinter ;)

I walked past this in an SW18 car shop and thought of you for some reason....

Fugly is as fugly does. It will run like a dream, start every time and not be dropping rusty bits and pissing oil.

You could always tart it up. Change the front lights, wheels, get a paint job.

It's a bit small though too...? I was looking at a big high-top ford transit van as being the benchmark for bare minimum size I'd need, really.

They're actually made by subaru and converted though :(

Stig is this for festivals or are you gonna live in it? :D

I'm getting on with rich! fine ATM, he hasn't thrown me out yet... but if he suddenly turns in later years you never know ;) :D

I'm thinking festivals, I'm thinking trips to see the folks, including xmas chilly week long trips where we don't want to have sleep on the sofa, I'm thinking romantic week long holidays to the woods in the middle of nowhere, pulling up and unfurling the solar panels and hoisting the windmill, (which is why I'd prefer to get something for 3k-ish, i need to afford all that shit aswell...)

Innit. I'd choose reliability and comfort over looks every time.

You may as well get a caravan then :p

Everyone I know who has had a Merc has been more than happy. The phrase 'work-horse' has been used on more than one occasion.

I was intent on getting a van this year, until I worked out my tax bill! Since then my gf has had a pay rise though so we're still looking. But looking at the prices of the few that are around, realistically we will be waiting until after the summer. Shame really, cos I'd got my heart set on one. But saying that I've wanted one for the last 15 odd years (but never had the cash) so a few more months isn't going to make much difference :)

Well,here's my suggestion.....

If you want plenty of space (and a low entry height) ,I would be looking for an old Talbot express ambulance,or the same thing based on the old shape Renault Master. They have custom built fibreglass bodyshells (behind the cab area),so no rust and they have a surprising amount of room in the back. Also, these old ambulances have most of the stuff in them for camper use, already.
I have bought and sold quite a few of these in the past.....a good option I think.

He always best to be safe!! :D

You're joking about the solar and wind aren't you? Aren't you?!!!

No way, why would I be? I need to be able to trickle charge the leisure battery when there's no other power. I know a few people who've done the same, and got into festivals free by offering to power a few stalls etc.

How am I going to keep the laptops charged in the middle of the forest with no wind turbine on the roof?

And when civilisation crumbles and I fuck off to sheffield with it, my mates will think it a very poor show if I'm the only one there without any power. :p

I did a google and these two came up:

Which don't look all that similar at all ?

*doffs cap*

I didn't think you could get them good enough to charge leisure batteries, in your face National Grid.

:D You can, they're not fucking cheap though, so it's a fair percentage of the whole master plan, cash-wise. And if someone nicks it...

Well...the first one is a Talbot Express (same shape as Fiat Ducato/Citroen C25),but that's what is known as a 'panel van' conversion.
The second one is a LDV Sherpa/400,but this one has the type of bodywork that I was on about...... So does that transit in your later post, but the best ones have a 'side loading' door as well..... The best ones to search for are the 'Patient Transport' ones (these have the side door) and generally have led an easier life.
I suggested the Talbot/Fiat/Citroen and Renault types as they have a much lower floor, being front wheel drive.....hence more interior height.

I see if I have a pic of any of the ones that I sold......If I have,I'll p.m you for your e-mail adress......I'm crap at posting directly on to websites ! :hmm:

** Had a look on eek bay and there are some decent looking Chevy ambulances (rh drive) on there, right now ! Ending in the next 2 days tho'.....

Found one! :D

Eveyone said this time of year would be the one.

Here it is:

Whad'youthink? Whad'youthink?Whad'youthink?Whad'youthink? :D

I likes it. It'd got wood! And a burner!

I'm going to see it on Saturday. Hopefully with an AA person who knows about things.

There's got to be quite a lot wrong with it for that price though?
The fact that it's an ex-schoolbus and ex-ambulance for one, I'm thinking, it's been doing top speeds with nearly dead people in it, and it's been doing long distances with children in it, which has got to be worse, surely...

But look at tit though!! I can see me in that.

clapped out banger FTW :D

I fookin LOVE it Stiggy!!!

Not mechanical enough to really know about it but looks like home to me :)

The AA won't come and look it over, they won't touch anything over 15 yrs old. :(

This is not very encouraging...

RAC will but it'll cost a premium rate, nearly £400, because of the age of the vehicle.

that's 20% of the price of the vehicle!

All you can do is have a look

Take someone who knows about this stuff though, if you are going to put some cash on the table

If you can see yourself in it, it's sound, and is comparable in price to other vehicles, then take the plunge

We got a van and haven't looked back, love it

:)

Find out what the current owner has described it as for insurance, and what it says on the logbook - it can be difficult to get new insurance on a conversion if it's not documented properly.
