Campaigners lobby for Archway tube station to be renamed 'Whittington'

Er, why don't they actually *make* it nice round there instead of rebranding it to make it sound nice? Fucking morons.

The tower should be revamped at the bottom if they're going to keep it, and that uncrossable road system should be redesigned, at a bare minimum.

there was an unusual assortment!
There was a big detached house opposite the shops that gave the impression of being a hippy cafe commune type place selling various eco publications. Then there was a Humanist Party shop that never seemed to open. And a gun shop!

Yes, I remember the gun shop and the Humanist place that was never open!
Not the hippy house though - was it opposite that row of shops or the ones higher up? Might have been before my time, I was there from 2000

On a slightly macabre note, I have to say the bridge doesn't look that high to me for the purpose of offing yourself.

I'm sure you stand a very decent chance of killing yourself, but then again what's that height that equivalent to, a fourth floor? I wonder how many people break every bone in their body, get paralysed or take days to die from their injuries.

Regarding the proposed name, I suspect the people behind it are Daily Mailers hoping for a rise in house prices. Fuck 'em.

I went past Archway today and was musing about it. The name is fine I think, it's just such a dire spot. Riding home from work last week at about 5pm there were two men having a fist fight in the middle of Junction Road. A scabby woman with a muffin top in a tank was trying to break it up but they were all drunk and useless. There is a lot of sadness round that area. I would call it Archway still but demolish the tower and do up the square and make it a lot less desperate.

If you've ever seen 2001 you recognise the scene....

We used to get on the roof of our house on Junction Road and worship the giant black obelisc Social Secuity office at the end of the road......

We had a guy who lived by our bins for bit, only had one leg, he'd lose it every so often, when we found it in the street, we used to put it by the bin, next day he'd be wearing it, care in the community etc

He slept for ages on a pile of opened out boxes, the stench was beyond belief

When we picked the boxes up, there was a dead cat underneath.....:(:(

Archway - Gateway to the Lost and Damned......

Bit long for a Tube sign tho.....

I think this move is the brainchild of one lone nutter rather than any sort of local campaign with any weight behind it

BBC Radio London wanted to interview me about the subject a few weeks back, but on the morning in question their bleak phone-in about alcoholism over-ran so I never got the chance

It's not like I go to Archway much (except as a bus interchange or the hospital or various other things...) but like, what bridge?

The bridge is actually Hornsey Lane which goes over the Archway Road (A1). You can't really see it from the tube station and bus stop areas at Archway.
