Camp film library - ideas?

Gone with the Wind is camp as tits. The outfits, the melodrama, the heaving corsets, Ashley, the sheer never say die bitching cooing manipulating attitude of Scarlett, the face-slapping, the technicolour sunsets...

Not saying there aren't aspects about the film that aren't camp, but by that definition any historical drama of the past would be camp. To me it's more old fashioned than outright camp. I don't think Technicolor in itself is camp for instance, it was just the technology of the time.

In the end definitions of camp are in the eye of the beholder to some degree, I can just think of many films far more camp than Gone With the Wind.

Spartacus is more gay than camp,though it is camp as well.

A gay subtext, subject matter or subplot doesn't neccessarely equal camp. Have you seen Quo Vadis, Samson and Delilah or The Prodigal ? As sandal films go, they are all far more camp than the relatively sober Spartacus. Almost any Hollywood Roman/Biblical epic from the 30's to the 60's is far more camp than the Stanley Kubrick film.

Yes. I have. I put Samson and Delilah already upthread. And I specifically said ''Sparta cus is more gay than camp.'' And posted what is still the definitive article about what camp is. And said 80% of my movie collection is camp as.

Servilan in 'Blake's Seven' was very camp (but it's not cinema). There are some wonderfully camp moments in 'Queen Christina' with Greta Garbo.

To me Psycho is pretty darn camp.

Not camp to the same degree as some that have been mentioned, and I agree with.

But the main character's camp, the direction is camp. And 2 out of whatever isn't bad.

I also think the remake is camp (but none of you will have seen that) so I wasn't suggesting it just because it is 'old'.

Sorry, I just don't see it. How is Norman Bates camp ? He puts on his mothers dress and stabs women to death because he is mentally ill. It's not like he's doing the can-can in drag. Hitchcock brings a sense of dark humor and irony to the film, but that's not the same as being camp.

I have seen the remake. It's not camp either. It just was a bad idea, badly executed.

Fred Astaire films can be quite camp ( can't think of a specific one though). Gene Kelly in an American in Paris is rather camp but I'm not sure the whole film is camp.

Just because the film features an event that is potentially camp doesn't mean the film itself is camp. The family end up subverting the kids beauty pagent, which is seen as something bad. Had it been a camp film it would celebrate trash, not condemn it so the film ends up rejecting camp..
