Cameras and smartphones at gigs

Don't want to ban it though. Too many rules already at gigs. Can't have a crafty spliff any more. :(

All we can do is disapprove silently.

I wrote a poem about this...

Remember watching Motorhead
in Bingley Hall in Stafford?
The time that fella's ears bled?
Lemmy's warts,
the wall of sound,
and Philthy going mad?

Remember where we stood that night?
And how that fella, six foot three,
came and stood in front of me,
so we just moved a step along
and simply carried on?

At every single gig for years,
a giant stood in front of me.
And usually, he'd introduce
the contents of his arse to me,
silently.
Fifteen pints of Guinness and a king prawn biryani.

And then of course I'd always stand
in pre-ordained desire paths,
where every single punter
would have to walk right into me
on their way to have a piss or get another pint.
It didn't matter where I stood,
I was always in that line.

But the last gig that I went to,
there's a fella stood in front of me,
he wasn't very tall at all,
in fact he was only five foot three
but in his tiny fist he clutched
a Samsung fucking Galaxy - S9.

He held it high, he held it long,
his phone recorded every song.
He didn't watch the gig with eyes,
his lust for life was minimised.
He didn't mosh, he didn't dance,
he didn't even sing.
And now at every single gig
there's hundreds of them just like him,
obliterating lines of sight with smart-arsing technology.

When they wend their way back home
and watch a live gig on their phone,
and wonder why it sounds so shit,
I hope they will remember the advice I gave for free:

PUT YOUR FUCKING PHONE AWAY MATE,
PUT IT IN YOUR POCKET.
PUT YOUR FUCKING PHONE AWAY,
BEFORE I FUCKING BREAK IT.
PUT YOUR FUCKING PHONE AWAY MATE,
PUT IT IN YOUR POCKET.
KEEP IT SAFE WITHIN YOUR KECKS
BEFORE I FUCKING LOB IT!

(When I wrote this, the S9 had just been released. I have to fucking update it now every time I perform this)

Yep! And because it's done nicely everyone is happy about it - banning stuff just makes people a bit bitter. This way you all feel part of something special.
I agree with this. Depends on your stature as an artist, though. Noone at a Kate Tempest gig is going to dare to disobey her request, I wouldn't have thought (and nor did they, it sounds). But a support band, for instance, can't do this easily without coming over as self-important.

Oh sure, it's a culture that needs to be created by the headlining acts, by the venues and by the promoters. The phone-filming dudes are mostly not going to bother filming the supports though are they?

Being old, I remember going to gig's before smart phones had been invented. Walkman's were the thing. I can remember warnings to the effect of anyone caught recording the gig will be stamped on, be thrown out and have the device destroyed. Was it a thing at who or zep gig's???

Probably people he hired himself to record for social media channels including his own.
He hadn't hired them, unlike the headline act who had a guy with a mahoosive camera charging around although, to be fair, he smiled a lot and kept moving around. They also had a camera set up at the back on a tall tripod which is definitely the way to do it.

See now surely he's taking photos so that nobody else has to.

I will admit to getting a few shots here and there at gigs, but its leagues away from some people who just film entire gigs which seems to defeat the purpose of going to a 'live' show.

Anyway, even those people don't annoy me half as much as flag waving cunts at festivals.

I think there's nothing wrong with taking a few shots - if I'm covering a gig I'll step forward and make sure it's OK with the people behind me to grab a few shots and then I back the fuck away - and duck down if I know I'm in the way of someone else's shot. It miffs me when it's when people standing right at the front, phones aloft, blocking the view for the entire show and killing the vibe for everyone behind them.

I went to a gig on Sunday. Wasn't that busy but the entire front row were filming the entire performance standing like zombies staring at their screens and following the performer's movements around the stage the whole time. They couldn't clap at the end of the songs because they were still holding their phones.

I get the appeal of capturing the moment or maybe grabbing a quick video to share, but this was weird. I think they only saw him through their screens, even though he's standing a few feet in front of them.

There was this event a few years ago in Manc that seemed to address some of the complaints about club nights (mainly by hiding the DJ and concentrating on the music/soundsystem)

I wish I went, but I didn't. There's another thing that looks similar, soon. Dark room, un-named DJ*, no filming/cameras, custom-built sound system.

*Sadly the 'Secret DJ' is rumoured to be Tim Sheridan so doesn't excite me musically. Concept is good, though.

This is just all kinds of pompous bullshit though - it's really not necessary. Just ask people nicely not to film shit, and most people will comply.

The second one is a bit pompous, but the first thing with LCD seems legit to me. I would love it if it was a regular venue/event.

I heard it was DJ Harvey but I'm happier not knowing who it is.

I will probably head down to Ace for the second gig. We have shared a few to and fros on twitter, he seems like a decent bloke and I want to hear that soundsystem.

I do take some pics at gigs but try not to go too mad.

I filmed all of GREAT at an IDLES gig for my (then 6 year old) daughter who loves it. I apologised to the people behind me, they didn't give a fuck but they were youngsters. I agree with the general thrust of the thread tho.

the best ones were the ones you arrived at in full swing, with so little lighting you had no idea what you were even looking till dawn broke
