Camden Market - hideous development proposed

Building aside, that rendering is really poor too. The perspective around the bridge looks wrong and the cyclist is going the wrong way down the street. Along with the notes on the website about it not featuring on the architects website I wonder if it's just a fake mock-up? Perhaps they are weighing in with something really bad so they have space to 'tone down' to what they are actually expecting to build.

Fair play for them managing to incorporate at least one big cannabis leaf and Bob Marley into the rendering though :D:cool:

According to the Camden Journal, this was just a very early idea proposed in 2007 for development on the site. Thrown out early on but reused by the company which rendered it as part of their portfolio of previous work.

Something for the conspiracy minded though - this was "an early conceptual idea from 2007 that was rejected at the time by the site owners as inappropriate for Camden" (i.e the year before the fire )

Doesn't look like that proposal is going to happen. The shops are now open on the street and behind them they've created a new market area, lots of purpose built units, complete with some hideous huge sign with a lion over a union flag and the legend 'world famous camden market' - or something like that. Looks shit, as you can imagine.

Actually, I was in there on Saturday and pleasantly surprised by the job they've done. Agree it's pretty soulless in places but that part of the market was never up to much cop IMHO and opening it up on to the canal a bit is nice and the little scooter seats were a nice touch. It was a very sunny day though so that might have helped.

The union jack/lion stuff is bizarre I agree. It ties into some kind of 'buy British' thing they are pushing and while I don't necessarily disagree with the sentiment in general I do think that Camden Market is about the least fitting vehicle to use for it (seeing as the stuff is mainly made in China stuff, sold by people from just about anywhere but Britain to people from around the world

Still they've been ruining Camden Market for as long as I remember and I've lived close by since birth :D
