Camden Crawl

i actually DO like Atomic Suplex though. why int you playing camden crawl?

raspy noisy stuff, and ska i also like.

Screaming Tea Party are good. Japanese metal with lilting pop melodies.

Just do it.
Highly, highly recommended. The NME haven't caught onto them yet so you might not encounter crowds f sheep in a queue outside.
Lovez them so much I even booked them up for a gig in December by which time who knows!

I probably WOULD think they are all shit. I think 99% of new bands are shit, and always have done. Theres only one modern band I like in the whole of London.

The Noisettes it is then :D

do any of them play the hornz? Style-wise i like anythin funky or bluesy and detest anythin that sounds like Bloc Party.

If you like Noisettes I've a feeling you might like Screaming Tea Party - heavy and noisy as fuck but they just pull audiences in with their pop sensibilities and sense of fun.

i never heard the noisettles. But will try and check them, and the screaming tea party. If they are chaotic or humourous they will be fun.

thanks dudes.

bring some positivity! what bands would you recommend? i feel a bit clueless.

ok, for a start i'd give all those shit bands playing the camden crawl a massive swerve. there are two absolutely stunning artists playing rare live performances this saturday from about as diametrically different musical genres as you could get -

masami akita (aka merzbow, japanese power electronics maestro) at ULU

or at the other end of the musical spectrum, but equally wonderful:

paul haig (criminally underrated songwriter, josef k frontman and nice guy) at Borderline

so do yourself a big favour , forget the shitty anaemic indie twaddle (that you will just find disappointing anyway) of the camden crawl and check out either of the above. i can guaraantee you will find the experience eminently more rewarding and memorable. :)

I'm not sure why I like the Noisettes as it's not normally my thing. They just do what they do so well and have guts unlike a lot of the new UK bands that all seem to be doing the same thing. Oddly I think the Noisettes can fit quite easily into the current popular music scene and still be good.

Just checking out Screaming tea party. Seems they are already myspace friends, which is odd because I don't make friends with bands unless I actually know them (ie I don't ask people to be friends).

They are playing tomorrow and then The Great Escape Festival in May with something special in between on the 25th;)

I know of four bands on a list that I was given and they are all beyond shit.

Lets Wrestle [info]
Los Campesinos!
Make Model [info]
The Wave Pictures [info]
The Bookhouse Boys
Dead Kids
Screaming Tea Party

If i was going which I'm probably not unless I pop into Los Camps tonight, these are the ones I'd probably end up going to.

I however would not knowingly be in the same postcode at the same time as

Robots In Disguise
One Night Only
and quite a few others.

for those who are going to this, try and see Acoustic Ladyland. they are brilliant live, sort of mixture of punk, jazz and Can-style grooves. with occasional speed metal bits! though there isn't a guitarist so it's not too off-puttingly Metaaaaaal for most :)

Future Of The Left are my big tip. You'd be a fool not to like them.

Also, I didn't see Circulus listed, but they'd be good for a laugh.

I will check out Screaming Tea Party when I get home.

Ha ha those two are two of the four I know, and I think I will make sure I am not in the city and maybe also locked in a box under the stairs just to make sure I avoid.

merzbow is amazing!! though not to everyone's taste i'd imagine. some of the concepts behind his releases are insane - total dada type nuttiness. such as the series of 100 hours of his works released in various formats at various values. the last one being a cd stuck in a car-stereo which is attached to the motor of a real car so comes on whenever the car starts up and is welded into the dashboard with galvanised steel so it can't be removed without destroying the dashboard. thus to hear the cd you would have to buy the car it was encased in. etc. he also makes records with his chickens.

i'd imagine there are some clips on youtube.

paul haig used to be a good mate of mine tho i havent seen him for years. josef k were one of the original 'postcard' bands (orange juice etc) but IMO by far the best. he's had a back cartalogue re-released and a bit of interest lately due to franz ferdinand etc namechecking him as an influence and recorded with everyone from the talking heads to brian eno to li'l louis over the years.

sure there'll be some of him up on you tube too.

(would search some out for you but alas activ-x controls disabled so cant watch films at work)

Thank you chico. you are a star :)

Chaotic and good-humoured to the max but damn fine players too.

My advice: don't be too close to the guitarist during the last song.
He hasn't impaled anyone yet but it's only a matter of time.

Hives not good?

Well they were very good, of course. Lots of enthusiasm, excellent stage craft, a really good show.

But what a truly odd band.

They do it by numbers. It was like watching a clever boy filling in a challenging colouring book and never going out of the lines.

Bit of the Micks here, a bit of the Stooges there, a bit of gospel preaching between the songs, some 80's poodle perm for good measure.

I enjoyed it, but I'll not see them again.

Henry Fiat's Open Sore supported - I'd see them again, but'd want the sound to be better so that I can maybe hear the guitar.

Yeah, they are very knowing, not a band with a lot of heart - not that that necessarily matters, but maybe came across even more strongly right after seeing that Portishead gig!

I thought they were better live than on record, mind you when I saw them a few years ago, I was hammered on free drinks at the V festival :o

Yes: knowing.

I was actually quite impressed by their cynicism. I like a bit of posturing when it's done well.

And yes - the instant they came on, I was thinking "It's not Portishead..."

I took along a young chap who has Hives records (I have none) and he said they are less polite live, more interesting.

.... shall we continue to chat amongst ourselves until a Crawler emerges to give us a review of last night's offerings?

maybe they're all tired after queuing up to se any reasonably hot gig.

Meanwhile, reminder for anyone crawling tonight...do not miss Screaming Tea Party!

Me too, not everyone can pull it off.

ok :) I really want to hear about what was good last night, am heading down there at about 5.30 this evening. I fancy seeing Metronomy (been meaning to see em for ages) and Operator Please, but of course it all depends on the venues and times...
