Camberwell - what is it like to live there?

I'd be up for some bingo action, although not for another couple of months. When I resume my social life, I'll come and give me bingo wings a flap :)

No smoking is not until 2007 - no idea when in 2007 though?

We could do an initial recce and have another non-smoking meet next year when the new laws come in though!

Dammit... I'm resuming smoking in 2007 ;) I could stop chuffing for a few hours of bingo, though. I've never been to a proper bingo place, only a drag bingo night in a gay club. It's not the real deal.

camberwell's alright, good transport even with no tube, close to some parks, very central to london really
Yeah it's like Streatham, easy access to places that are good.

wrong as in it's the furthest away part of camberwell from posh and becks' pad ;) :D

oh fiddly flowerpetals.

anyway - went to Camberwell.

I wasn't that impressed by the place. The street we might be renting on - one side is grotty, the other side is really nice!?!?!?!

London is wierd. Not sure it would be good for lil'un's education. Have checked the ofsted report and it looks ok - but English is a second language for the majority of pupils.....

The crime is somewhat higher than average (the Green is a hotspot - see the Safer Southwark site) and there is the odd loon but I don't find it particularly threatening.

Went there for the first time in years the other night and didn't find it at all threatening, but I've lived/worked in some really rough areas over the years so I suppose I'm used to it. Felt perfectly at home, unlike in many of the so-called "better/trendier" parts of London I often travel through/visit. I even found myself chatting to more people at the bus stops than I ever do anywhere outside of Battersea. I'll be looking to buy a place next year, and I think Camberwell might have gone to the top of my list.

tanky posting....

both of your points stand for so many parts of london though Relahni - nice bits and grotty bits side by side, english as a second language for school kids.

don't rule camberwell out on those points alone.

There is no tube and the rail stations are at the extremities of the areas, so you would be getting the bus a lot. It doesn't take long to get to Oval or Elephant, hence illustrating that it is pretty central.
Aye, but no trains is shit, and housing is pretty poor unless you live off on the grove.

I used to like the Hermits a lot, and there is the Art college which adds some arty students to the staple south london mix.

its a good central location for all parts of south central london, but to get into central or north its a bit shit i find.

I feel a lot more at home in SE5 than I did in SW11. Battersea does have better shops, but it's crap at night – no decent bars, just places like the Fine Line.

Other recommendations for Camberwell: Tadim for a coffee and some Turkish Pizza, the backroom of the Bolu kebab shop for good food and a place to drink when everywhere else is closed.

I'm looking forward to moving back to the area.

Transport from Camberwell is pretty good IMHO. Trains from Denmark Hill to Blackfriars, London Bridge,Victoria and other parts of South London. To get to North London You can go to Loughborough Junction or Elephant and get direct trains to Kings Cross and other parts of North London. Plus it's very well served by buses.

Tadim is great, lovely food, cheap, plentyb of veggie stuff. Also like Seymours cafe, just off Church St, by the Hermits Cave.

Tanky do you mean Pomodoro y mozarella? I've never been.

Pomodoro y mozzarella is shit... we ordered a bottle of red wine and with great pomp they came out and showed us the unopened bottle, did the whole uncorking and tasting routine...

We were trying not to piss ourselves laughing... it was exactly the same bottle we buy in our local late night shop - 2 bottles for a fiver!! :D

The food wasn't much cop either tbh..

Move to Tulse Hill or West Dulwich.. cheap, really nice chilled leafy streets, transport is fantastic (L Bridge in 15 mins, Victoria in 12, Blackfriars in 15, Kings Cross in 20, Brighton in 50), all the shops you'd need plus you're right by Brockwell Park, Dulwich Park, Dulwich College, Knights Fields and 10 mins from Brixton on bus, 4 mins from Brixton on train.

Best place I've ever lived, if only my landlord would sell us our flat!

oh well, we've always thought it great when we've been - the food has always been delish and the service nice and friendly.

We've only been the once and it was quite late at night.. so maybe we should give it another shot. The service was good though - no complaints about that.

If wonder if it would do less business if it was called tomatoes and cheese.
