Camberwell - what is it like to live there?

It's alright. I live at the Loughborough Junction end, so am as likely to spend time in Brixton rather than Camberwell... I prefer spending time in Brixton, tbh, there's a lot more going on.

I don't think the area's got partcularly high levels of crime. I feel pretty safe around the area.

It's ok. Camberwell's just a bit bland, really. Like I said, I'd rather spend time in Brixton.

If yer stonkin rich and have just bought a £2M georgian pad on Camberwell grove, its great

Other than that, its nowt special really

its sort of a nowhere place, in between here at there

never really liked going to the area, always felt a bit bodgie tbo :(

East Dulwich is where its at & only a mile down the road, but is getting rather full of self important professional twats at the minute

camberwell's alright, good transport even with no tube, close to some parks, very central to london really

The crime is somewhat higher than average (the Green is a hotspot - see the Safer Southwark site) and there is the odd loon but I don't find it particularly threatening.

It is a very busy area. The shops stay open late (veg and *ahem* alcohol, plus... DIY products) and there is actually quite a bit to do in the area.

There are a few good pubs / bars (some of which are a bit tucked away, and some quite smart ones) and a reasonable number of places to eat - Turkish, Vietnamese, Italian, a Nandos etc.

I wouldn't really call it bland. It lacks in the in-yer-face blast of Brixton but as S London goes there is more to it than most areas. It also pisses on Brixton in architectural terms and has some of the most attractive streets in S London in which to live. It also has some of the least attractive council estates. The two ends of it are very different.

There is no tube and the rail stations are at the extremities of the areas, so you would be getting the bus a lot. It doesn't take long to get to Oval or Elephant, hence illustrating that it is pretty central.

Yeah, but you still have to do your shopping at that crappy Butterfly Walk place by McDonalds.

I'm trying to think of some good things about SE5. Erm... the Redstar, Funky Monkey, the Chinese supermarket... there's also a sit-down chippy. Don't get their curry sauce though, it's crap.

There's a big Sainsbury's on Dog Kennel Hill too.

There are a few other nice places to eat/drink that are tucked away, as Monkeynuts says.

Ruskin Park too :)

If you get the bus from Camberell, past Denmark hill BR and up towards Dog kennell hiil, you can sometimes Jenny Eclair in her dressing gown sitting at her kitchen table

is that a plus point ?

Se5 has a Woolies, a McDs, The Castle Pub, good chippy, a KFC ans a decent Greek bakers

Redstar long closed and it was shite.

- The Castle
- The Arts college
- The Grove / brb
- Dark Horse
- The Old Dispensary
- Black Sheep
- The restaurants, possibly - not tried them. Interesting retro-Greek on the Grove.
- Georgian architecture
- Late night DIY shopping
- Relaxed approach to licensing law
- The Olive Shop
- Late bakery
- Distance to centre
- It's not Peckham
- Denmark Hill station, with pub

I've been living in Camberwell for three months now and no one has offered me a carrot. I'm very disappointed.

Oh yeah, that pub at Denmark Hill station is very nice indeed... and they sell that fruity, red-coloured Früli beer

camberwell aint that bad.. free internet in the sun and doves (bit of trendy dickhole though.. does good bloody marys) , nice and spice, thai on the end of coldharbour lane, red star, rat records for some dodgy ragga 7s

i *heart* the olive shop!

can anyone be specific about the kennington / oval end of camberwell?

anyone know anything about john ruskin school?

Why has no one mentioned Gala Bingo yet!

Good fun cheap night out! :)

Will be even better when the smoking ban comes in and you don't shorten your life by 1 year for every evening spent there.

I keep meaning to tell boohoo about that... I'm sure she (or possibly someone else) mentioned a bingo night... I've never been before :o :D

Didn't we talk about this ages ago? I'd be really up for it - especially when smoking isn't allowed (not that I'm usually massively anti but bingo halls are the smokiest places in the universe for some reason  )

It really is hideously smoky... really really bad.

No matter where you sit there is someone chainsmoking really stinky cigs.

If you lot fancy doing a bingo night though I'll start a thread about it!
