Calling all Urban Musicians and Beat Manglers

I'm not sure this will work but I kind of had an idea which the very talented Urban musicians might be willing to be involved in.

It goes a little something like this:

Anyone can upload a sample (as long as its copyright free) according to a theme (I.e. "Industrial" or "Floaty"). The sample can be anything from a vocal (rap or song or whatever), to a high-hat to your dog barking... the possibilities are endless and when we have enough samples (say about 10-15) then the real fun begins. The samples get bundled in a file for people to download and start making their track. Then we vote and the winner gets to pick the first sample and theme for then next event.

Obviously the rules need a bit of work and maybe there is a better way of doing it but basically I think it could be the start of something quite good.

What do people think? Any ideas on how to make it better, why it wouldn't work, etc would be very welcome.

At the moment I think it's a little bit too similar in essence to the Urban Music Competition but that might not be a huge problem.

:D

Nice idea. I guess maybe you'd need to agree a bpm, or at least a bpm range, otherwise it could be tricky to get all the samples to work together.

But I'd be game for this.

And when you say "copyright free", I assume that would encompass stuff that had been sufficiently mangled as to be unnrecognisable? ;)

I also think that the weirder the samples the better. IMO it should be a challenge to make things work.

Oh god, what have I done! :D

I also thought this would be a good way of getting other Urbs (who may not be into making music) into it as they could submit samples too and then see them go into a tune.

All in all I think it could be quite interesting: a kind of democratic way of making music.

I wonder what Dub and Ed would think about having the winning tune be played at Offline and/or PROD??? Just an idea like.

Online Jamming

This reminds me, i was gonna start a thread a while ago when i found out about a wicked little plug-in called VSTunnel; basically it inserts into your sequencer's Master Out channel and lets you jam online in real time with other people. Works on both PC and Mac, and you can download a free version (with the 'save' feature disabled, so we can't really do ongoing online projects as of yet) or pay something like 70 euros for the full thing. It's not that much good if you keep your main production system offline (like i do), but i thought it was worth mentioning and seeing who'd be up for it anyway! You can download the plug-in at www dot vstunnel dot com.

EDIT: Oh yeah, great idea, i'm game (and you are? :D )

I think it would work best if your allowed to use outside samples as well. At least for the first one we do.

I think a gmail account could work. We set up [email protected] (or whatever), post the log in details on this thread (in the first post, maybe?), then people can just email their samples to the addrerss. Then when there are enough samples, people can either log in and download them all, or some kind soul* could host a zip file with all of them in.

*I could probably do this.

Might i suggest we PM all interested parties with the log-in details to the account?? The last thing you want is some prat/troll changing the password on the account or something equally stupid.

Prats and trolls? On urban75? Yeah, right.

Probably a good idea

Of course, it was mine :p :D

Any opinions/thoughts on the whole online jamming i mentioned above??

I'd have to remember how to use Cubase, which scares me a bit, but I'll have a look at the site when I get home.

I'll have a look too. Sounds promising if a bit daunting.

The gmail account idea sounds like it could work, but dont you need one of those invite thingy's to set one up?

Count me in. Would we need some kind of structure to who posts what kind of sample? We don't want 12 grimey bass noises and a snippet from a Bill Hicks routine.

Actually, that would be quite cool.

I don't think we can have too much structure. Surely we want to encourage people to send in whatever sample they want to send in. In my mind, people will just send in whatever and if it happens that we end up with 12 different tinny hihat noises then you just have to be creative and make something out of it.

:) quite so, quite so (& count me in btw... i'm usually lazy about this kind of thing, but hey, maybe i'll get my act together this time, & I like the idea of having to use a limited range of samples)

By the way, are we meant to ONLY use the samples provided and make a track from them, or are we meant to make a track including all fo the samples??

I presume you mean the former.

The way I see it, you have to use ALL the samples uploaded. You can use other samples. If you CANT use one of the samples then you have to explain why when you upload the tune... or pretend that you did put it in but its so mangled that you cant hear it. :D
