Both numbers have gone up, the dead to 71, the missing to over a thousand.
'More than 1,000 missing' in California fire
The latter number is surely just as a result of the authorities having a mismatch between the identified destroyed properties, and the displaced people they've had contact with?
It'll probably be a long time before they have a good idea of the death toll - sounds like the evacuation was chaotic, with thousand of residents, many of them quite elderly, fleeing and scattering all over the place at short notice, the list will probably include a lot of people who are staying in motels or wherever and don't know that they were reported missing by somebody who failed to get hold of them.
But some of the photos from Paradise show quite a few vehicles still in driveways ... apparently those addresses are where search teams are looking first - their job's being made a lot more difficult by the fact that some victims were almost completely incinerated, meaning they're having to sift through the wreckage looking for bone fragments and teeth.
