California Burning

Both numbers have gone up, the dead to 71, the missing to over a thousand.

'More than 1,000 missing' in California fire

The latter number is surely just as a result of the authorities having a mismatch between the identified destroyed properties, and the displaced people they've had contact with?

It'll probably be a long time before they have a good idea of the death toll - sounds like the evacuation was chaotic, with thousand of residents, many of them quite elderly, fleeing and scattering all over the place at short notice, the list will probably include a lot of people who are staying in motels or wherever and don't know that they were reported missing by somebody who failed to get hold of them.

But some of the photos from Paradise show quite a few vehicles still in driveways ... apparently those addresses are where search teams are looking first - their job's being made a lot more difficult by the fact that some victims were almost completely incinerated, meaning they're having to sift through the wreckage looking for bone fragments and teeth.

Horrific :(

Horrible thought but the majority where elderly with new hips/joint etc which would survive flames and heat. Most if not all medical stuff is indexed.

Accessed this LA Times article via a proxy site (it's blocked due to GDPR) so not sure if the link will work but here goes. Pretty harrowing stuff.

California fire: If you stay, you’re dead. How a Paradise nursing home evacuated

I think it was on Twitter a post mentioned that dental and medical records may have been destroyed in the fire, along with the people they'd hoped to identify with them. Not everything will have been kept on computer, and even where it was, depends on the location of servers, back up arrangements, etc.

After like eight days, you'd think most people who got out and were staying with friends, in motels, etc. would have found a way to let family know they were safe. Suspect most of those missing are dead, and many won't ever be found. :(

Hopefully the list will shrink as the situation becomes less chaotic and different sheriff's office etc. communicate with each other more - the list of missing also topped 1,000 after last year's northern California wildfires but most of them were eventually found to be alive.

I searched for a few names picked at random from toward the end of the list and found evidence three of them survived the fire - including a couple who told the San Francisco Chronicle about how they survived the fire in Magalia. In Magalia, residents stayed to save homes, but now they're stuck

Found out earlier today my friend's dad died in this. Which is quite horrible :(

Don't know any details, simply "he didn't make it out". Fucking hell.

So sorry to read this.
I hope you can help your father through this.
Everything is so terrible down there.

:(
Appreciate the thoughts, but just to clear up confusion - it's the dad of one of my friends, my dad's (thankfully!) not involved.

Never met the man, and friend is someone from football so not a very close friend, but we've spent many an evening on the pitch and in the pub together over the better part of a decade. Just truly horrible to contemplate what she and her family are going through :(

No, you were quite clear about it being your father's friend - doesn't matter really. It's a horrible way to die.

Migrant farmworkers are still at work in conditions that look apocalyptic - apparently few employers have bothered even to provide dust masks.

Those photos tell me the wind must have been in those worker's favour. The pics do look very dramatic but it's not the full picture.

Well surprise, surprise!

Donald Trump’s $12 billion bailout of farmers who were hurt by hi...

According to the Times, the bailout program “has done little to cushion the blow” of the president’s trade wars, “with red tape and long waiting periods resulting in few payouts so far.”

In fact, the Times estimates, just $838 million of the $6 billion worth of bailout funds that have been authorized so far has been paid out.

Edit: Soz - wrong thread, but kind of linked as the Midwest will likely be a fire prone dustbowl soon enough!

Apparently she had a minor heart attack at 45.
Still under observation at hospital. She seems to be over the short term worst.

Main worries flu/measles/pox breakout scabbees in the make shift camps up and down the country..

Her husband is pretty popular with the church fanatics so should be provided for. But with three kids two teens and young one, couchsurfing at granparents but for how long.
