Caged Death Fight: Croydon Tram Link vs. DLR

DLR has a ten times better view. they both go from one shit place to another though. i do like east croydon though, and have much more use of the tram link. oh my god i just cannot possibly pick between the two..

Is Wimbledon shit then? I think it's alright.

tbf, about 90% of tramlink is on old national rail routes, so Croydon's hardly been robbed of road space.

Unlike the new Edinburgh tram system which is all road and involves the closing of large areas of Edinburgh. It is not that there is no disused rail routes, there are, they could take the tram down to Morningside, in the South of the city and as far east as Musselburgh by using old or existing rail track, but they are instead paralysing large area of the city whilst building the tram network which will only have one route from the airport in the west to leith via Murrayfield , West End, Princess Street and Leith Walk and then back down again via Ferry Road and Trinity a big loop that excludes 80% of the city. And what for Lothian buses have been voted best best company for the past two years.

This, sitting at the front of the DLR is great fun, especially when stoned :o

Do they still do the tour guide trains? I think they were around 11am or something. Someone (or an automated voice) would give you DLR and Docklands facts about where you were.

I'm not convinced the edinburgh tram is very well thought out either. (street running) trams are quite a particular mode of transport. They're only worth putting in when buses on the same route are at capacity.

Yeah, but trams are also a tourist attraction - I remember years ago working on Irish Tourist Board and we had some research that asked about public transport in cities, trams are really popular as a city 'feature'. Plus the thing about Andy Strang being transport minister...

On the OP - DLR is more fun, Tramlink is more useful for Ikea

Cant say which is better as only been on the Tramlink, its lovely, very smooth :D

And last weekend i got on at Phipps bridge ...and didnt get a ticket ...was looking out for inspectors all the way to East Croydon. Scary, 50 quid fine :(...does anyone get caught/pay? If you see them surely you can just jump off as they get on... :hmm:

I don't think it's as easy as that. They are usually in fairly large hordes. They hold up the tram and get everyones tickets coming off before they get on. You would have to push people over and scramble over a fence to escape which could be a little tricky at some stops. The tram is so cheap I don't think it's really worth the odds. I see inspectors all the time.
The odds on the bendy buses are much better. The fines are less and even if TFL kept up to their target for inspections and you were caught every so often you would still be paying half the cost of fares in fines.

DLR for me. I love the views of that part of London, at once ultra modern in places and baron wasteland in the same vista. And you can ride at the front. :)

I've only been on the croydon trams a few times, they weren't particularly exciting. And I've never had any desire to go to Ikea so if that's the best it can offer I don't think I'm missing out much.

It's about exhaust-based pollution though, isn't it?

The voice of Croydon tramlink is Nicholas Owen the ITV Newsreader, the lady announcer is Barbra Windsor. (An odd combination)

Could have done electric buses then. Less disruption.

West Croydon of yore

Something else the DLR wins on is the 3.30-5.00 school rush; anywhere on the tram link between those times is a cross between St Trinians and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre - they won't even let you on it with out a stab vest. Almost :hmm:

I know the DLR bankers are tossers but . . .
