C4- Meet the Natives

What a lovely, lovely family!Got quite choked up there!
---

"Why would you want to trap humans?!!"
LOL! Exactly what we were thinking!

'Why are there so many empty buildings and still so many sleeping on the street?'

Good fucking point, fella from Tanna.

Also fascinated at how swiftly the guys defer to the Elder. The bit with the pressure washer for example.

That cunt at the end made me shout at the tele:mad:

'oh we have prisons, you see, and it's much easier'

The fact is that they have some very sharp and valid perspectives about how we live and I was in tears when the chief made his speech about homelessness.
I feel bad for them about the prince Philip thing though. That bit isn't going to have a happy ending.

have to admit to being a bit choked up at that point. TBH it's bits like that, and last weeks artificial insemination of pigs bit, that elevate this prog to something relevant.

Also, see how the mancunian fella made the effort to learn some of thier language? I thought this weeks family engaged with the guys on a far more genuine level than the last lot. The tribesmaen seemed to respect this lot, whereas last week only the gameskeeper got their respect

I disagree

they are being earnest and respectful towards their host and the fact is that for this family Vimto is the traditional welcoming drink, just as much as passing round cigarettes is their traditional welcoming ritual. On one level I didn't like seeing the guests drinking Vimto and smoking fags as they are poison (IMO) however the whole point is for them to sample what's on offer and they seem to be quite discerning about everything and to have some considered opinions I agree with 100%. For example they are deeply concerned that the English care more about animals than they do about people, which is a concern I share.

from the way those lads were smoking, I'd guess that this wasn't thier first experience of tobacco

Then you misunderstood me.

I meant that the show feels like it was commissioned on the the idea of doing somthing like 'the real borat', the comm (that very much sounds like it has been written for them) smacks of that. I think they all hold themselves very well and I expect it is the tribesmen alone that have taken the programme to a more interesting and respectable level.
Maybe I am being cynical about how channel 4 commission, having been though the process with them and others several times.

I wonder about this

I'm irritated by the gratuitous close up shots of the penis gourds which I suppose are meant to attract viewers via salacious means, however the later editing seem to be sympathetic and sensitive, so perhaps they want to draw people in and then show them something deeper and more meaningful.

I feel sad that there has been no proper exploration of the guests' religious beliefs as the whole history of the development of the John Frum thing is fascinating.

If you google for John Frum you can find out more about it.

But ultimately, even with those reservations, I think the programme is quality.

I don't know where they found that upper class twit, who whether through inbreeding, the abuses inherent in the English public school system or for some other reason is clearly mad as a hatter but also completely loathsome.

The man trap was horrifying and his blathering about prison made me hate him with an intensity I seldom find myself experiencing.

I hope they will, through contact with him, gain a realistic understanding of who Prince Philip really is and that he does not deserve their attention.

Tobacco plays an important ritual role in the lives of many tribal people, however the tobacco they use is nothing like the foul, poison infused cancer sticks that they were consuming in England.

Many grow their own tobacco, and the leaves of some of the many plants called tobacco often have a hallucinogenic quality, something you don't get with B&H

That was a great ending, they were so happy to meet Prince Phillip, and were still happy even thuogh he didn't agree to visit Tanna.

It was joyous, heart-warming stuff. They can certainly teach us a thing or two.

I think he might have been the victim of editing, as he seemed alright apart from that.

I didn't understand the stuff about the pawpaw being ripe, what was that about?

I didn't see the last one - the upper class house. However I thought that the programme had run it's course by the end of the first one.

The working class programme just served to show how little the visitors understood about a huge and complex industrial society. They didn't really have any any reference points.
