Buy Nothing Day

I've posted this before and every year I see the same response from you miserable bastards :D

For me, it's quite funny, and it makes me think about the fact that I buy 'stuff' that I probably don't need on most days...do you ever go out of the house without your wallet or purse? Ok, it won't change the world or anything, but it might make me consume a little less in future.

No

Mainly because my Oyster is in there along with donor card.

That said I do often take only the cash I can afford to spend. If I only want to spend £3 a day for the week then I only take £3 out with me.

Perhaps you get the same response as it seems completely unclear as to what on earth the point of this is. Appears to acheive nothing and has the words "tune into life" attached to it.

Spose it depends on exactly how preoccupied you are with acquiring crap for no apparently good reason. I never go out of the house without my wallet, for the same reason I dont leave without my mobile, I might need it. Yet Im perfectly capable of not buying all manner of useless shite while im carrying it.

Plus if I do decide to buy something, lets say food, I fail to see how im somehow innately then less 'in tune with life' than if I hadnt bought food which infact allows me to continue living.

How will you be spending buy nothing day?

I'm going to the football that day so fuck that

I usually buy nothing because I'm poor. This isn't a political statement, I just consume less because I have less

If I send a MMS message from my phone that day does it count as 'buying' or as the bill comes at the end of the month am I ok?

See...it's working already. Normally you would've sent that mms without a care, now your're thinking. ;)

yes, most days when i go to work - i find it helps cut down on unnecessary spending

What if I charge my phone, or turn on a light?

These questions could go on for a while....

I think we should create Eruvs where it is still acceptable to at least use electric lights, buy a Guardian, or send a text - but do it outside those areas and you get banged up in the sheeple pen.

You would think the message had got through after so many years of futile posting. Unlike you I can't afford to buy stuff I don't need on most days, so perhaps you need the day more than us. The happiest days of my life are going for walks to the park with my daughter and spending 35p on a packet of biscuits. Some of us already understand money can't buy happiness.

I'll never quit.

And cheer up you miserable git.

What's your next thread going to be? A rant about how commercialised christmas is and how people buy too many presents and cards? No doubt followed up by a major strop in late December about how you've had no cards, no party invites and no presents. :D

If you turn on a light or use the oven ,kettle etc. Then yes you are spending.

It's like...you know me.

:p

Better surely to think about what you buy, where and when all the time (which you probably do anyway if you've got little or no money), rather than what might seem a bit of an empty gesture on just one single day?

Yeah great idea. Though i usually forget when these days are

I dont buy any Christmas cards or pressies either. Total fucking pain in the arse. Always hated running round the shops panicking about getting stuff, usually at the last minute on Christmas Eve.

Until a few years ago when a girlfriend revealed that she didnt buy stuff at Christmas... what a revelation! :D

I bet the person who choose the 28th made damned sure they had nothing on that day so they could easily snear down their noses at people who didn't take part. Two of my mates have birthday dos that night so I'll be spending plenty! Saying that, I have more "buy nothing days" a month than I do "buy something days" so if this person only has one day a year where they buy nothing they must be fucking loaded!

'To buy, or not to buy...

Saturday November 28th is Buy Nothing Day (UK). It's a day where you challenge yourself, your family and friends to switch off from shopping and tune into life. The rules are simple, for 24 hours you will detox from shopping and anyone can take part provided they spend a day without spending...'

The crusties will have a field day

I bought a "full Irish breakfast", £7.50 worth of assorted merchandise from an art gallery, some vegetables from the market, some chilli sauce and a jar of pickle from the cash and carry, and a reasonable but not excessive quantity of alcohol in pubs and corner shops, today.

I do feel embarrassed about it.
