The general public in Malaysia and Indonesia would rather have their present booming economy than save a few primates , very sad but equally very true.
25 years ago most Malaysians didnt have a pot to piss in , if you visit Malaysia now it is a very different picture.
poduction of palm oil in Malaysia in 1986 2.5 million tons , in 2006 its 12-13 million tons , at dollars 450 per ton that is 54,000,000,000 usdollars of revenue per annum
Palm Oil production in Indonesia/Malaysia destroys Orang Utans' habitat, so do not buy unless it's from a sustainable plantation - there's no official way of proving this, so I would avoid it altogether.
a palm tree stays productive for about 15 - 20 years , what do they mean by sustainable I wonder ? Any tree is sustainable they just plant another one , in fact they are planting millions every year .
Palm oil is my business by the way , it pays my mortgage , I may be slightly biased.
I started out in palm oil in 1982 ,too young to know any better , prior to that I was a tea taster I nor any of my friends have ever knowingly killed an Orang Utan and I`m afraid its way too late for a career change.
