Those people of Wigan and Bolton may know their pies (I've had a fair few there) but they've missed the mark with this one. Give me a proper saltfish pattie, spiced up and full of flavour anyday.

Was butter rationed in the North till recently or something. Was they just called this to differentiate them from the inferior 'Hydrogenated Vegetable Spread' pies served in the NE....

He he. Sorry - couldn't resist the wind up. You've got to admit, it doesn't sound all that.

But I'll give that part of the country credit; they know their pies. Even a chicken pie in Greenhalgh's, which I'm reliably informed is low down in the pie-baking fraternity, boasted big chunks of real chicken. Not Gregg's-like smeg paste, no not at all.

Butter pies still sound dull though, although I promise to give one a fair audition next time I'm down.

Saltfish patties, by the way, are a divine West Indian staple. Salt cod, mixed with a little veg and hot (chilli) peppers, encased in brilliant yellow cornflour pastry . Not just pedestrian butter and spuds, if you get me...

Bad comparison :p At least 'fish and chips' and 'chips and fish' both describe what the dish is, butter pie doesn't as it seems potato is the main ingrdient?
 
why is ginger cake called ginger cake, when it's main ingredient is flour? because it's flavoured with ginger.

with this pie, the butter is the flavouring, so therefore tis a butter pie
 
But ginger is a proper flavour, whereas butter is a fat-based spread usually served underneath another flavoursome topping. Or added at the end of cooking to give properly flavoured sauces a bit of a rich glaze.

Nope. I just can't get excited by the prospect of butter in a pie. It's like the unskilled equivalent of a proper french croissant - except these folks were too lazy to even come up with a flakingly inventive way of injecting more butter into the pastry. So they just lobbed a bit of extra butter into an ordinary potato pie and that's it; the whole big da da. Big fucking whooo - do people crave less excitement in their food up North or something...

i went to a beer festival a couple of months back - booths were doing the catering, and both the butter pies and the sausages were to die for.

tarannau - it's a subtle flavour. but a delicious one... uber comfort food.
 
Well, I was up Northwards this weekend (Bolton, near pie-heartland Wigan) and just had to take a trip to sample one of these much billed butter pie things. Only fair, especially after I've (apparently) not shown due reverence to this local pie favourite.

Was it a taste sensation? Did my tastebuds light up and show me the way to pie heaven? Well, not really, although I'll admit that the filling of sliced potatoes and butter was surprisingly soothing. Reassuringly good texture too.

But - on the downside - they certainly didn't pass the pie portability test, requiring a fork to prize past the pastry and foil case and get into its molten hot filling easily. And I can't help but confirm that they become more than a little boring after a few bites too - after half a pie I was just eating to complete the thing rather than out of enjoyment.

Cautious thumbs up in certain circumstances for the butter pie. Underwhelming by itself - a poor standalone snack compared to the aforementioned saltfish pattie for example - but I reckon that creamy potato filling would be a combination winner with some spicy toulouse sausages and a green salad.
 
In the interests of research, you really need to try another one in the middle of a Northern winter. Sometimes if you eat a butter pie for dinner, you can even take your vest off!
 
I can almost believe that. The filling was certainly hot enough to burn my hands up, although I reckon a shedload of alcohol would help more. I'll bear it in mind when I fancy dressing 'au Geordie' next.

I've got my eye on one of the more impressive and tasty looking meat and potato pies next time I'm up - I felt a little cheated with the plainness of the butter pie if I'm honest. I generally have to ration the pie-intake up there - surreptitiously sneaking off to eat one round the corner - or certain relatives may take offence that I'm not eating enough home cooking.

if you want meat and potato pie you need to go to preston and the shop me and killer_b go too :D

Why don't Northern people die at 40?! Cholesterol intake must be off the chart.. and don't even get me started on the Scotch! ;)

Its down to our robust anatomies, we are a strong people, further up the map though I cant condone my Scottish brothers and sisters for eating stuff like deep fried pizza's and Mars bars, that is so wrong;) :)
 
Cool, two posts about butter pies. Love it.

I'm going to have to nip down New Hall Lane, not been down there for ages and I know how good the pies are...
 
Butter pies, I was in the away end at Deepdale (Preston away) and I was characteristically after a pie, I asked the woman what a butter pie was, she smiled at me benevolently/pityingly before lovingly describing it and its virtues. Needless to say I bought one, one of the most heavenly comestibles I have ever had.

The game ended 0-0 and we had a Saturday night out in Blackpool. Needless to say that bloody pie was the highlight of my day
 
I've only had butter pie once - it was lovely!! If you like them you might like homity pies... I discovered homity pie in Cranks in Devon - this is their favoured dish and apparently they always sell out...

Homity Pies

Wholemeal shortcrust pastry - 10 oz
potatoes - 3/4 lb
Onions - 3/4lb
Oil - 2 tbsp
Butter - 1oz (I soften this down)
Fresh parsley, chopped - 3 tbsp
Cheese, grated - 4oz
Couple of good-sized garlic cloves, crushed
Milk - 1 tbsp
Salt and Pepper to taste.

This is enough for 6 individual pie dishes about 6" diameter

Preheat oven to 220c/425f/gas mark 7. Prep pie dishes with the pastry. Cube and cook potatoes and fry chopped up onions/crushed garlic in oil. Mix the potatoes and onion with the rest of the ingredients (leaving enough cheese for the tops). Put into the pastry case and sprinkle with cheese. Cook for 20 minutes till golden. (If you make one big pie it takes 30 minutes to cook)

My new housemate is from Kendal, in Cumbria, where the butter pie is an unknown. He took the plunge to introduce him and his German girlfriend to them at the same time. She's now concerned the English cuisine is worse than she feared, he's thinking of moving to Wigan.....:D

Ive often thought it would be good wth cheese but I think you can buy cheese pies with spuds in in some Northern bakeries:)

Having suffered the relentlessly beige, flavourless slop which passes for food in Germany, I'd have thought she'd have immediately bought a box full!

the bakery round the corner from work does a cheese pie which is essentially a butter pie with cheese mixed in. it's fucking gorgeous... i may have one for lunch. :)
