fucking wanker, you just reminded me of sleeper :(

louise wener went to my school. as such whenever i see her shite books for sale i'm reminded that my own faiilure to publish anything of note is a constant black mark against my name for mr 'ronnie' oldham, who taught us both english and reckoned i was better.

compare:

"he's not a prince,
he's not a king
he's not a work of art or anything"

with practically anything produced by bluestreak, even whilst heavily sedated and know that the world is a cruel, cruel place :(

If only you'd been in a minor Britpop band.

thanks for the support maggot and JTG. but one day i'll show them, oh yes, one day i'll make mr oldham proud of me!

Sleeper spawned the phenomenon of Sleeperbloke, the anonymous members of porridge indie bands with marginally charismatic frontpersons.

ah yes, I remember sleeperblokes now :D

elastica were pisspoor imitations - nothing wrong with influences as long as you do something with them. Take away Wire (and the Stranglers) and their songs had nothing, which is why they did pretty much fuck all...

there's also nothing wrong with connections - yeh, the industry runs on it - but Elastica were just that: other people's songs, Justine's connections, and a bit of heroin chic to make the adolescents feel edgy.

toss

I dunno.. I can barely remember 4 bands (not talking bleepy fuckers)

Blur
Oasis
Pulp
Elastica
Radiohead
Suede (all ready shite)
Menswear
Manic Street Preachers - not exactly Britpop

Err, who else?
Ash? Their first album and first EP were excellent. Did the Super Furries arrive in time to be considered Brit Pop?

"Elastica" is a very good, short, sharp album. Busted took longer to get going, improving markedly with their second album. "Air Hostess" and "Crashed The Wedding" knock seven shades of shit out of anything Green Day or Blink 182 have ever done. Great pop songs.

Yes - and how could we forget- Supergrass !!! The court jesters of Britpop... (etc.)

Faint, faint praise, as Blink-182 are absolute fucking shite.

You could have gotten them to intervene. There must have been a way. Threats of violence, blackmail, anything...

:D

As I'm not really that likely to attempt to encouter them again, and I don't know anyone who owns their record (I don't, do I?? ), I think I'll let you off just this once.

Close call, though. :D

Agreed. However the music can be thought of as from the same genre, punky-pop, and yet because Blink 182 aim themselves at disgruntled skateboarding boys who desperately want to be American, rather than tom-boyish teenage girls as Busted did, they're afforded more "critical and popular acclaim".

the whole skate punk thing is interesting - even as a NoFx fan of many years standing i can see that the chugga chugga formula IS there in inferior acts like Blink 182, and than Busted are pretty close to Blink 182. It's a continuum, but it's not as long as some people think or hope!

Maybe.

Or maybe releasing their first records independently and playing with Pennywise and on Warped did it. I wasn't actually calling Blink 182's punk credentials into question, because afaik, those are impeccable... apart from the obvious MTV sellout thing... just kidding.

No, I was calling their songs into question. They represent the tired, hackneyed end of the pop-punk spectrum to me.

But all the teenage punks I've met in the last few years have prefered a host of US bands including Blink 182 to Busted, who I think are more of the nice-boys playing at dressing up market. I haven't heard a lot of Busted, as I said, but if you force me to pick, I'd wager I'll take What's My Age Again? over just about anything of Busted's... probably. I could well be wrong, though.

A whole host of other bands before that, mind...

But I'd rather listen to NOFX, or Rancid, or the Ataris or...

Etc.

Mind you, if you want to be really offended, take a listen to Tom DeLonge's Angels and Airwaves project.

Ughn. :(
