Bush speech: McCain suspends electoral campaign

This all seems stranger and stranger the more I read.

Has a President ever had to appeal directly to the public like this to help pass a bill through congress? This is proper weird.

nothing to do with this then? :hmm:

A consulting firm owned by John McCain's campaign manager accepted large fees from a mortgage company at the centre of the financial crisis ripping through Wall Street, according to reports today.

A firm led by Rick Davis, a long-time McCain aide and chief of the Republican candidate's day-to-day campaign, received payments totalling $500,000 between the end of 2005 and last month from Freddie Mac, according to the New York Times and others this morning.

The reports appear to directly contradict comments by McCain at the weekend. Asked in an interview about ties between Davis and the mortgage giants, McCain responded that Davis, "has had nothing to do with it since, and I'll be glad to have his record examined by anybody who wants to look at it".

or Mccain's 'aahh the economy is alright, oh no actually it's fucked' comments (i precis obviously)

That was my thought. A ploy to be seen as more patriotic than thou.

Oh, it undoubtedly is. I mean, what possible damn good is McCain going back to Washington going to do? "Oh thank christ, we were all at sea but now John McCain is here the economy is saved! He's the world's greatest financial expert!"

However, assuming they've not just miscalculated: it's something that he thinks he can get away with, and/or something that he can't avoid. If he thinks he can get away with it, it means that Bush is planning to announce something really serious. If it's something that he can't avoid, it may still mean that Bush is going to announce something really serious, but either way it's something that will change the way he's campaigning at the moment.

That's a very clever campaign move. 'Look, I care about the economy so much that I'll even stop campaigning for President!' Obama can't do anything right in response.

^This. McCain clearly has a good team behind him, first a running mate who appeals to both the crazy christian right and horny middle-aged blokes and now this. And lets not forget that his party are by no means above vote-rigging and other such scallywag behaviour...

I have an instinct that Bush is going to make a very, very serious announcement.

(FT leads on money markets being even more nervous than last week - ostensibly because they're not sure that Congress will pass the measure to buy up bad debt; but I recall stories that markets are worried that the US can't afford the deal.)

Whether the Bush announcement will be tailored for election purposes...

Going to bed now. Hopefully the markets won't have nosedived and driven the world into turmoil by the time I've woken up.

BBC expects Bush's speech to call people to back his bailout plan. Do please remember that this administration has a history of exaggerating the fear factor on certain issues.

McCain said he will suspend his campaign in order to build consensus for the bill in the Senate. He thinks he can get a consensus by the time the markets open on Monday.

So, it's a one business-day suspension on the day of the debate? Beautiful
:hmm:

just to jog my memory

which of you was stockpiling food again?

bush is on the telemavision at 9:01 Et aparantly.

Well I'm not staying up for that! If capitalism has fallen by the time I awake at least there's still beer in the kegs.

More seriously this is Obama's reaction, and I think it's really the only appropriate response
Obama
"this is exactly the time the American people need to hear from the person who in approximately 40 days will be responsible with dealing with this mess.”

Well, the worst that can happen is that Bush declares a state of emergency, nationalizes (sic) the financial sector, and invades Canada.

Right, so, before the Bush broadcast later tonight, who wants to break down in easy to understand sentences just what in the fuck is going on over there

it is indeed a well considered reply. leaves him plenty of scope to jump whichever way he needs to.

I REALLY hope this is a damp squib and posturing. I guess an easy way for the USG to save a small fortune is to just pull their troops out of the various theatres they are currently engaged in
