Bush - "America is addicted to oil"

lostexpectation said:
this no suggestion of reducing consumption...

have you seen that press conference where the guy says huge consumption of oil is the american way?
I wonder if very many people who read this are going to understand what you are trying to say.

I know that you are not really trying to make any substantive point, but for others I will point out that the power outage in the Northeast a few years back was a result of failures in the transmission grid. These failures are not generally thought to have resulted from any re-regulation to increase the influence of market forces, as such re-regulation typically is not applied to the transmission grid. (Generally speaking, in any area there is but one grid and one entity operating it, thus no competition or market exists for transmission services.)

Turn it in, you aren't saying anything here that doesn't apologise for the rampant free for all (and attendant corruption) in the energy market. Of course you duck the issue of Enron...uncomfortable is it?

Dude! Some advice: Here in the Bay Area our IT products are generally of much higher quality than our political analysis. Get your software and music toys from us. Find your political programs and leaders elsewhere.
I did notice the sharp people in S.Valley tended to be the hyper smart Asians that gravitate to that Techie Nirvana. The actual Yanks trolling arround Stanford all seemed to be in ligtation with the 5th wife or in some middle management hell.

Most people don't live in deserts, the sun doesn't shine there at night, collectors are too expensive, transmission is inefficient and expensive, etc. Photovoltaic generation in desert areas will never amount to a significant fraction of U.S. electricity production.

True. They are growing.
bout time you guys tightened the belt then hey ;)
You drive a 1.1 ltr citreon ax yam?

Watch it! You can get banned for these kinds of generalizations around here! (At least, you can if you direct them at the wrong people.)

Mr Friedia those little bitty cars cant pass emmissions requirements.

We Know better than to take a car that small out on the road.
The crash survivability is unacceptable to our Dept of Transportation.

That's funny they have very low emission rates but I'm sure your right about trying to get 5 Americans in an ax. Unsafe for your gridlocked road systems i doubt it.
We Know better than to take a car that small out on the road.
Shit yeah i forget, everything is big in amerikkka isn't it. Heads, belly's, guns, arses, hot dogs, pollution.
The crash survivability is unacceptable to our Dept of Transportation.
Yeah they're no good for ramming the guy in front and shooting from. In the cheaper models this can be a right pain in the arse what without lecky windows and all.

but hey, if You want to take Your kids out in a automobile that flimsy please feel free to do so
I prefer taking my kids out in nice clean air, mostly by bicycle and it's safe to walk places around here too ;)

Exactly and as The Dead Kennedys once sang "Kill the poor, kill the poor, kill the poor toniiiight".

Not me. Who's Gordon Brown and what did he say?

You have no clue what is going on outside your borders. I'm even willing to bet that you don't even own a passport.

Ignorant [racist] fucker.

Americans work hard...

Americans might work hard but they don't work efficiently. Based on working working with Americans and other nations I'd have said that the Asian nations work better towards a goal. Put Americans on a project and they talk a lot about what they are going to do, rather than get on with it...

Yep, and usually the wealth of others work...

I absolutely love you for saying this! Well, sort of.

It's true, isn't it? There is a strong thread of xenophobia running through your posts. I guess it's only to be expected from a chest thumping jingoist like you.

You don't like anyone who doesn't resemble you - non?

He's right, and wrong, but more wrong than right.

The US does have the highest US$ GDP / worker ratio in the world. However, that misses the thrust of the argument. If you instead take US$ GDP / hours worked, which is a more accurate figure if you're talking about how hard people are working, then the US is far from the top.

rogue yam said:
Nonsense. The productivity of American workers ($GDP/worker) is the highest in the world.
I think you'll find yourselves beaten by Luxembourg, Norway, and Equatorial Guinea :D

I was offered a job two years ago in the USA. It would've meant a pay cut as well as an increase in hours and a decrease in holiday time... I forget what the exact figure is but I think the Yanks work more hours than most of the rest of world.

Pity they don't actually get anything done...

Gordon Brown's speech is the only thing going on outside our borders? Dear God, it's worse than I thought!

You actually going to respond to the above posts. Or are you just another Yank Troll...?

You're more dense than I first suspected; you can't read and comprehend at the same time.

Your knowlege of countries outside the US is shockingly awful....that cannot be refuted.

Sure but it's little different to the claims made by mears, who uses practically the same statistics to make out that th US is better than everywhere else. GDP - on its own - is never the best way to measure a country's productivity or wealth. If the US's creditors were to foreclose on the state, it would be bankrupt in a trice...of course that is never likely to happen.

It's especially poor as a measure of wealth for poor countries rich in natural resources, as it doen't take into account that the GDP is (partly) generated from non-renewable resources, so the country is actually becoming poorer, the greater the amount of it's GDP is generated from sale of natural resources.

Of course, mears will be along with "what's the alternative". I'd refer him to the thread where I explained alternatives to him, but I know (from past experience) that he'd ignore it or pretend it doesn't exist. :)
