Buses not opening the doors at traffic lights

Being a bus driver in London is one of the worst jobs in the world if you ask me.

I asked a driver about this question and he gave me loads or reasons many of which have been covered, he did say that since the open back bus has gone drivers are far more reluctant to do it, also opening the doors disengages the drive of the bus and sometimes you have to reset them before you can drive away.

I don’t really understand how that would make a difference myself as the bus doesn’t know if it is a stop or some lights, but all the other reasons he gave seemed reasonable.

well if the drive of the bus is disengaged whilst it's stopped at traffic lights, it could hold up the rest of the traffic behind if the lights go green quickly and the driver is unable to get away as quick as he/she should. and doing that could delay the driver on getting on with his journey. it may only be a few seconds but added to other delays the driver mgiht face could mean the driver running late on the route. they can get in serious shit if they fall behind, and quite often there are bus company peeps posted at various points on many bus routes to check that drivers are on time or not.

I have seen a couple of people pulling the emergency stop on the outside. After they loudly declared they were not missing the bus, paying and walking on, the driver didn't do anything.

You could try that, but I think you'd have to have the attitude to get away with it.

:o Guilty m'lord on a tube breakdown day when I'd waiting 45 mins for a bus (any bus) to take me somewhere and none of them would open their on doors, just the off ones.

This time I was too munted to be able to engage hand/eyes/other bits. The brain wasn't connecting very quickly ...

Don’t want to derail the thread but he also gave me a list of things people are not allowed to carry on a bus but I can’t remember any other than glass and fuel of any kind. Also buses are meant to carry certain things again the only thing I can remember he said was something called “choc’s” Things that go under the wheel when the bus is at a bus stand on a hill.

Erm. aren't those buttons marked "emergency use only, fine for misuse" ?

If the driver is that much of a wanker to leave you standing outside, what do you think he'll do if you just let yourself on the bus ??

I guess it would involve radios, paddywagons, the BTP and a court appearence :(

Hmmm, see what you mean. But if he wouldn't let me on, I would probably push the damn emergency button just out of spite, and then walk off.

Shouldn't have got rid of the routemasters, is my opinion. But no-one asked me.

I reserve the right to be cunt on non-routemaster buses if frustrated by the inability to get on and off when I fucking well want.

Obviously, as you point out, getting ON by using the emergency thingie isn't a good idea. Getting off using it is easier.

Giles..

No, they say 'emergency door open'. There's nothing about fines. I had an argument with the driver when I did it but he did drive off in the end. I would imagine they'd refuse to drive off until you were humiliated enough to get off the bus.

And Giles - good point, well put :D

No it wasn't. I would never have said something so obnoxious and frankly rude if I hadn't just come back from dinner at a friends, where I drank a little too much wine! Hic! :D

Done a similar thing at Liverpool St myself, lobbing a coffee at a bus isn't smart or clever :(

I was amused by the swearing - I've never seen you swear before :D

I don't recommend using this technique when trying to get off the bus. I was on the express/limited-stop bus once and a couple of guys were getting very upset with the driver cause the next stop was about half a mile further than the stop they wanted.

When the bus was waiting at traffic lights, one guy decides to press the button to open the doors. Of course by the time that the door opens, the bus already moving as he jumps out and he ends up sprawled over the pavement.

His mate hesitates a bit too long but decides to do the same, only to stumble sideways as his arms are flailing around and he ends up wrapping himself around a road sign. :D

I have to admit, it is extremely frustrating as a passenger when the bus drivers here don't watch what they are doing and drive past bus stops with people waiting to get on. I'd hate to be a bus driver because of all the abuse they get from stupid arseholes.

Shouldn't the fact that it was 6.30am and I was a woman on my own and it was bloody freezing mean he could've bent the rules (if they exist) a bit?

You could've tried flashing your tits at him.

;)

Woof

I have noticed in that some bus drivers can be extremely rude. :( You can complain about them online. I did so recently for one arsey driver who wouldn't let me get on the bus as I only had a ten-pound note and was somewhat pleased that he got in trouble for it. I doubt they can get in trouble for not opening doors outside stops though.
