Bus and tube fares to rise :(

Oh bugger.

Sure you had to have them by 25 September (or thereabouts). You can buy weekly ones in newsagents though. Not sure whether you'd incur that £3 charge. It was waived, not sure whether they're charging now though

The problem with Oyster is the top up. Went to do this in Brixton but it did not let you have a start date. The current one was valid that day so I did not want to pay twice  If you do it on the internet it takes 3 days

I don't understand what you mean. If you renew a travelcard it takes effect from when the old one runs out.

Well it was oics card and in Brixton tube is showed the new valid date from that day and not the day after  Not sure if it was fault on the machine..

I have a pre pay Oyster as I cycle most places so its good to know fares are discounted on that

liberty, you can go to a window at the ticket office and request that the new ticket starts the following day, or the day after that. it's not a problem. i do it every month.

It was a problem then when we were late and about 50 people waiting :(

No cash on busses? what if you lose your oystercard or forget it or whatever?

I dont have an oystercard and I dont want one. I dont see why nonoysters are subsidising oysters travel either. *GROWL*.

how does it? people can equally buy their oyster credit or daily ticket from both a machine or at the kiosk, why should one lot pay more than the other for using the same method of purchasing their ticket?

beacause with prepay you use it once for multiple journeys, whereas buying a ticket everytime you go on a tube takes up time.

you are missing the point oystercard=ticket in the future...are you saying you don't want a ticket?

re no cash....they are installing lots of machines at bus stops to buy tickets there, before you board.

Dunno. I did just dig out a couple of receipts for my monthly, though, which I renew a few days before it runs out, and the start and end dates are all the same date each new month, previous one ends 24th next one starts 25th.

I have seen them on the main and busier bus routes. smaller ones don't appear to have these machines, from what I can see so far. I don't mind buying tickets from machines or a bunch of them from the newsagent, but I do object to microchips.

Well someones gotta pay for all those little oiks that get on the buses for free  :D

Oh and its only buses in London that are going cash free and that will take sometimes to come into effect.

I bought a weekly last week as I had a week off in september, wanting to buy a monthly on sunday said it would overlap. Didn't fancy the extra long queue in brixton ticket hall when the machine was totally free. Just seemed to negate the point of using oyster.

Also does anyone know the website where you can view your usage? I thought it was on the normal website (oystercard.com), but couldn't find it on sunday.

pretty much yes. I might do more research into short term use of the oystercard.

Ah. I read no cash as you had to use an oystercard. I can just about cope with machines at bus stops (so long as they work and I have the correct change and the mugger isnt lurking right next to it for when I get my cash out).

I suppose I'll have to get an Oyster card soon, then.

I shall just get a prepaid one and put money onto it as needed. No worries about "Big Brother" tracking my journeys.

Giles..

there are lots of pedastals going in at bus stops, you don't notice them as the machine aren't on top of them yet...there's one outside our flat, I only realised the other day what it is going to be.

It all coincides with no more routemasters :(

Ah, I see, you weren't renewing one but getting another one... that might explain it, and you should be able to do that definitely, it's only logical. Wouldn't be hard for the machine to give you the choice.

This is the sort of thing that the rest of the UK has had to put-up with for years now. With nothing like the quality of service Londoners enjoy either.

Stop moaning & join the real world :p :)
London bus culture is different to hicksville, it’s now a question of catching any bus whenever you’re able - sometime as many as 2/3 before reaching your destination.

Ken is just a fucking wanker, he could’ve pushed for government subsidies, lower operator profits or even corporate fucking sponsorship instead of hammering passengers.

For a start as has been said 'no cash on buses' does not mean you have to have an oyster, it just means that bus drivers wont be taking cash from customers or having to carry money around with them.

Also youre probably not subsidising oyster users travel - if you think about it oyster card users are paying in advance for their service, so theyre giving LT money for nothing - this is probably why LT want to encourage more people to use oysters...so they can have lots of money :)

perhaps only where there is a ticket machine at the bus stops along the bus route?

Nope, i dont think so, he is currently triaining to be a bus driver and they were told that there will be no cash fares accepted on any routes.

Well they've had those machines by the bus stop where you buy your ticket before boarding for over a year in Millbank and I frequently see the machines broken and people unable to board the bus as the driver refuses to accept money.

This is in Millbank - hardly full of hooligans. How long do you think these machines will last in Brixton and similar areas before they're vandalised?

london buses are already very heavily subsidised, a few billion iirc

Same for me, it would be 2 or 3 buses - each way for my daily journeys & a total fare in excess of £8 for something you would be covered for in zone-1 alone

Would actually like to see that happen here, it would end the fiddle that sees drivers routinely slap the charge for another fare stage on to each journey. Between 40 & 70p from each passenger on each journey & you land in the shit if you have the temerity know the exact number of stages for a journey!

Last time First tried to deal with this, they quickly backed down in the face of a near-total driver walk-out!

How much to do Oysters cost? Can't find it on the tfl website

£3. I've got one for occasional trips to London, and can't see the problem with them. No personal info's ever been handed over, and all I do is top-up with a tenner on arrival and I'm OK for the weekend. Can't see paying with cash lasting much longer now!

The buses up here have recently been fitted with Oyster-type reader things, but I asked and they're not planning on actually using them. (I'm not surprised - at £2.80 for a single, you'd be topping up every day!)

Mine didnt cost anything, I went along to renew my weekly a fortnight ago and they asked if I wanted one as they were stopping the paper weekly travelcards.
