Burrito's in London ?

Reno

The In Kraut
The excellent Beach Burritos in Berrick St recently closed because that whole block is getting redeveloped. They did the only authentic and affordable Burritos I've come across in London and I'm practically convulsing with withdrawal symptoms. Can anybody recommend another Burrito place that is good ?

El Panzon in the Dog Star Brixton.

best burritos in London, bar none.

google it and see the masses of recommendations from Mexicans.

I'm not a real Burrito fan but I would guess that La Perla could throw something along those lines together.

La Perla is lush, but sometimes they can be a bit poncey... Dogstar makes lovely burritos, but no matter how much I beg, they never make them remotely hot/spicy, which sucks. And the Dogstar itself sucks a bit.

So, in conclusion, no idea..

Taqueria (sp?) on Westbourne Grove sell the best authentic mexican food I have ever tasted... possibly the only authentic Mexican food I've ever had. but I like nice food and it was nice and it wasn't Tex Mex. Go there. It is really nice and you don't have to spend silly money but you can if you want to splurge. It is great.

P.S. I don't work there.

P.P.S. i don't own it

...only Burritos are not authentic Mexican food, they're a San Francisco thing, so most real Mexican restaurants don't do them. Thanks for the recommendation though, I'll try and check it out when I'm in the neighbourhood. :)

Don't know when you were last in there Chris but they have a couple more levels of hot lately - the hottest being 'dont come cryin to me'. To my palate it's proper fucking hot.

The dogstar is also better every time I go in there.

And to answer the original question the burritos are best I've had outside USA

I'll check out the Dogstar the next time I'm in Brixton. I don't like too spicy anyway, so I'll be asking for a 'girls' burrito. :)

Aha! I was wondering why it closed - that place is the best outside of the US - Californian mexican food is better than real mexican food (too much oil, cheese meat etc.,)

However I did hear that the Beach Burrito peeps had plans to open new stores in COvent Garden and also in Chelsea somewhere (ithink). Im keeping my eyes peeled - Me and mrsSativa would often mission it up to Bewrick street just for the burritos (white corn tacos are killer too!)

Other than that there are two other interesting spots:
"Down Mexico Way" is just off regents street and does a good modern take on mexican food - its used to be amazing but last time we went (a couple of years back) the staff were coked up and the food was shabby. Could have been an off day...

Then there is Cafe Pacifico in covent garden - which isnt at all bad, and has got me in the habit of always squeezing an orange over mexican rice and enchilladas. - Not at touch on beach burrito mind you.

I havent checked out that dogstar spot yet - had no idea it had a good reputation - the thought of pub mexican food was at the front of my mind. Will check it for sure.

There is a forum dedicated to the best mexican food in England but I cant find it right now. I'll post the link if i find it.

Someething I read on there once said that there was a red wagon that pulls up on Chapel Market and serves till about 3pm (lunch trade) and that this is as good as Beach Burrito - some rave reviews on there. I've never managed to catch it - though I do pop up to Indian Veg every so often...

That forum also has the gossip about the two new beach burritos set to open up.

I loves burritos me! I dont eat fast food takeaway stuff, but if there were Taco Bells in the UK I dont think I could resist.

Me too. I lived in San Francisco for three years and got utterly addicted to burritos there, so when Beach Burritos opened almost next to where I work, it was like an answered prayer. I've been scratching on the metal shutters making whimpering noises ever since it closed.

The manager was a really nice guy and gave me free burritos on the house a couple of times because I was such a devoted customer. I also heard that they are re-opening somewhere else. There were queues round the block at lunch time, so it's a no-brainer.

I've never had a burrito - aren't they essentially a sandwich made with a giant crisp?

A burrito is a tortilla wrap, generally filled with a choice of meat/fish/vegetables and rice, black or refried beans, shredded lettuce, cheese, sour cream, guacamole and salsa but ingredients can be varied in any combination.

A taco is usually made of corn and it's harder (maintains that folded circle/half moon shape you see).

A burrito is made (usually) from a soft wheat tortilla.

So the taco is the giant crisp then!
I like all the ingredients of these things, fajitas too, but I have trouble eating them without making a mess all over myself and my vicinity, so I rarely eat them

I know exactly what you mean.... :D I have a good friend - Mexican - who visits us periodically in London and insists on bringing a suitcase filled solely with various items to cook... and lots of tequila - it gets very messy indeed... :D

How bizzare.
That would be like me visiting Mexico City with a suitcase full of pies, sausages, sliced white bread & PG Tips.

Anyway...
Exquisite on Blackstock Road certainly used to do excellent burrito's. Haven't been there for a couple of years though.

.

She does it so she can host a Mexican party to thank us for having her to stay. It's very kind of her. I met her in Japan and she used to have stuff sent over so she could host these big Mexican parties.

I ate some of her food too (at a craft thing) - I would have no problem taking her up on a Mexican party if she was my mate - wasn't she scouring London for green tomatilloes (????) to make salsa verde when she was last over?

Oh yes - I'd forgotten about that! Yes... she was quite insistent on the proper ingredients... :D She's wicked actually, I was just thinking of her today ... She absolutely LOVES Brixton - she used to go running around Brockwell Park and get hit on by countless men!!!

Soho is the perfect location for them - but as you say the crowds out the door said it all. Im pretty sure the new location was earmarked for covent garden.

I lived near there a couple of years ago and there was talk of redeveloping Berwick St and getting rid of most of the market. I hope sense has prevailed since then and that they changed their mind in the meantime. I think that block is being redeveloped for luxury flats and all the small shops and brothels in there are being closed in the name of profit and gentrification. Once the people move into those flats they will no doubt do something about the remaining sleaze and Soho will lose the last bit of edge it had. The working girls are being chucked out on the streets where they will be a lot less safe, there was a lot about it in the local paper at the time.

That is a fucking disaster. AS I've said before, my favourite street in the whole of london is Bewrick Street:
