I was shocked to discover that you source the majority of your teak from Burma, which is ruled by one of the most brutal dictatorships in the world and where all plantations are owned by the junta, which means that money from them goes directly into the hands of the regime. Please consider alternative options for sourcing your wood.

Thanks,

Here's what I got from Britannic Teak a week or so ago:

Points of View

We will have to stop using Burmese teak and start using teak from China or India.
P S how come there is a very large British Embassy still there. what does it do for the Burmese? . What happens if Britannic walks will the mills still work and pay the workers

Bunch of divs.

From the burma mailing list:

Turns out Texaco are a sub-brand of Chevron, who are the other mainwestern investor in Burma! http://burmacampaign.org.uk/dirty_list/dirty_list.html#c Arg. This means we should target both, or at least not send people toTexaco. Maybe we could do one hour at each? Or if the group is bigenough we could do both at once. We could send people to the Tesco garage in the other direction instead.Tesco's main supplier seems to be Greenergy:http://www.greenergy.com/Products/index.htmlwho buy "petrol components from a variety of oil companies".More research needed if anyone has time.... XXXX despairing at having to advocate lesser-of-many-evils

Just bringing this back to the top.

my uni's social justice magazine is out now with article i wrote about burma inside

Worldwide Chevron Protest - November 2

We will be holding the Chevron Protest through FAX and PHONE calls on FRIDAY November 2nd from 11am Eastern Time (This is 8am Pacific Time)

FOR A LIST OF INTERNATIONAL OFFICES, PLEASE VISIT: http://protestchevron.blogspot.com

Chevron pays millions of dollars in oil and gas royalties to the current military Junta. These payments help keep the dictatorship in power.

We urge Chevron to escrow these payments and set them aside for the legitatimate elected government of Burma headed by Aung San Suu Kyi.

Why this specific day and time? It is the time of Chevron's Earning/ Shareholder's Meeting.

If you live in Oxford area you could visit Audley Travel and ask them in person to lobby their business partners, the Burmese military regime.

Apparently their offices are based in a 17th century converted wool mill so it might be a nice day out anyway.
