Burj Dubai tower: the world's tallest skyscraper nears completion

I like many of the architectural shapes but most of it's impressiveness get lost because of too many at one spot.

Dubai is megalomania at it's finest and in fact violating the rule of modesty, but that is not so very often in people's minds.

salaam.

Yes, but their excuse would be they need to attract tourists and businesses

I'd like to stay in the underwater hotel

Built on the exploitation of labourers from the Indian subcontinent who get treated like shit in every way imaginable.

Got a mate who lives in Dubai, apparently loads of people from India have been killed working on it but the Arabs sweep it under the carpet and censor the press. Caste system is something like this

Arabs
White people
Horses
Dogs
Cats
Indians
Africans

:(

He has this old money/new money hang up. He comes from old money - inherited capital take-it-for-granted rich and socially priveleged. Not his fault, of course - but he despises those with new money who made cash instead of inheriting property and then spend it on flashy things. They should have grown up in luxury and have more taste, like him, obv.

No money is a category he is unaware of.

Blimey, you seem well informed about the guy.

But not so well informed, unfortunately, on the contents of the FAQ (odd that, as it must be easier for an interested party to winkle out). This bit ...

Anyway, my theory's far simpler, so it's the one I'll stick with, unless Alde comes by to explain his "immodest" comment for himself.

Actually cats would be above dogs in islamic thinking I believe.

Dubai is a monstrosity and will only be noted in 100 years time as a deserted folly.

The reality is that far from being hyper-urbanism, tall buildings are a regressive step that diminishes the importance of public space. A variety of activities are concentrated in one private, highly-regulated vertical "street" that greatly reduces the potential for emergent activity in the interstices.

Welcome to social exclusion, 21st Century style.

Welcome to the 21st Centuary Petro-Monarchy.

Arabs

All the rest.

salaam.

I have many dogs (and cat).
It's only when people want to get influenced by dubious Traditions and by superstition that they come to think of dogs as "possible reincarnation of satan" and such.

salaam.

BTW, re: the 'modesty' comment, I would guess that such buildings smack of hubris and are therefore un-Islamic because the Koran/Qu'aran makes a pretty big deal about being modest and humble about yourself...

It is even more a question of intention behind all these projects: to overclass everyone else and it's not even intended to serve as places of worship, like some mega mosques (also more a PR for local rulers than anything else). Even worse: It's mostly intended to accommodate non-Muslims among which the largest group has no clue about Islam and couldn't care less about Islamic Law and Tradition.

Like I said: some structures and projects are very interesting up to beautiful from architectural point of view. That is the only thing where my interest goes to.

salaam.

what, like religion for instance?

Much things related to religious practices and taken for religion come down to superstition. It's not exactly my task to clean the world from such deviations. I can only do it if I see it happen and people are open for a lecture ;)

I don't suppose you want a lecture on religion? On superstition? On history of sociological developments affecting them?
It's an interesting subject and you find more parallels to so called "secular" societies then you would think.

salaam.
