Build me an ultimate early 80's pop mix

Good choices

ABC's "All of My Heart" for when you want a good drunken sing

Well I hope and I pray

That maybe someday

You'll walk in the room with my heart

Add and subtract

But as a matter of fact

Now that you're gone I still want you back

Remembering

Surrendering

Remembering that part

All of my heart

Road to Nowhere - Talking heads
Straight to hell - The Clash
Perfect Skin - Lloyd Cole and the Commotions
Gun Law - The Kane Gang
Geno - Dexys Midnight Runners
A Forest - The Cure
Here Comes the Summer - The Undertones
Happy House - Siouxsie and the Banshees
Give me back my man - The B-52s

From 1980, which was the only time I saw them, the Ants Invasion Tour. Just after signing to CBS and well... :(

Great thread. There was so much good music around in the early 1980s.

I would like to hear somebody who was too young to remember the early 1980s to confirm.

Is it just nostalgia?

One tune you could not get away from hearing in the early '80s:

Reminds me of the summer of '83 and every single great big portable stereo in Valentine's Park, Ilford had it playing. All different mixes. Wedge haircuts, Lacoste, Lyle & Scott & Adidas Forest Hills. Oh, and Karen from South Woodford.

Mirror in the Bathroom

:D

Mirror in the bathroom
please talk free
The door is locked
just you and me.
Can I take you to a restaurant
that's got glass tables
You can watch yourself
while you are eating.
Mirror in the bathroom
I just can't stop it,
Every Saturday you see me
window shopping.
Find no interest in the
racks and shelves
Just a thousand reflections
of my own sweet self, self, self...
Mirror in the bathroom
You're my mirror in the bathroom
You're my mirror in the bathroom
You're my mirror in the bathroom...
Mirror in the bathroom
recompense
For all my crimes
of self defense.
Cures you whisper
make no sense
Drift gently into
mental illness.
Mirror in the bathroom
please talk free
The door is locked
just you and me.
Can I take you to a restaurant
that's got glass tables
You can watch yourself
while you are eating.
Mirror in the bathroom
Mirror in the bathroom...

Sounds of the suburbs!

Fucking hell, I love youtube! :D

Here's an old 12" that reminds me of good times back in that summer of '83

Something a bit off the beat and track, but early '80s, British & sounding better than it did at the time even.

Here's a few suggestions

The Pretenders - (sneaking this one in as the first UK number 1 of the 1980s, although it was actually released in November 79)
Icehouse - Psychedelic Furs - (1981 version, not the 1986 re-recording)
Re-flex -
Bauhaus -
PIL -
Elvis Costello -
Violent Femmes -
Cocteau Twins -
The The -
Icicle Works -
The Mighty Wah! -
The Very Things -
Tears for Fears -
Jesus & Mary Chain -

:)

e2a: Robyn Hitchcock & The Egyptians - which I seem to recall Andy Kershaw once introducing as 'a slice of pop genius' on his R1 show.

Another edit: Bugger. Forgot to include the song I meant to post when I first clicked on the 'Post Reply' button... I got a bit distracted wandering through YouTube :o

The Red Guitars -

All looking good!

Need to start downloading now.

Cheers all - though keep em coming if you have more.

I think I need to add a few of my own too...

Cloudbusting should be in there I reckon - just sneaks in @ 1985

Some awesome tunes there, though I fear that many are falling just outside of the "pop" arena..?

Hmm - dunno

The Bottom Line - Big Audio Dynamite
Reward - Teardrop Explodes
Shipbuilding - Robert Wyatt
Everyday i write the Book - Elvis Costello
Duchess - The Stranglers
Ceremony - New Order
Fascist Groove Thang - Heaven 17
Papa's got a Brand new Pigbag - Pigbag
Party Fears Two - The Associates
This is not a Lovesong - PIL

Here's a playlist I put together recently. The criteria: tracks I remember being played at my student union disco. I imagined a night in December 1985, and limited myself to what would have been being played at that time. A couple are a few years old at that point, but were still popular on the dance floor, so they went in.

My kids hate it. :D

  • Master And Servant - Depeche Mode
  • She Sells Sanctuary - The Cult
  • Walk Away - The Sisters Of Mercy
  • In Between Days - The Cure
  • Cruiser's Creek - The Fall
  • Nelson Mandela - Special AKA
  • Peppermint Pig [7" Version] - Cocteau Twins
  • Bigmouth Strikes Again - The Smiths
  • Blue Monday - New Order
  • Never Understand - The Jesus & Mary Chain
  • This Is Not A Love Song - Public Image Ltd.
  • V2 - That Petrol Emotion
  • Walk This Way - Run-DMC
  • Cities In Dust - Siouxsie & the Banshees
  • Hand In Glove - Sandie Shaw
  • Papa's Got a Brand New Pigbag - Pigbag
  • I Want You - Cabaret Voltaire
  • Like An Angel - The Mighty Lemon Drops
  • Seven Seas - Echo & The Bunnymen

I think I need some early Pet Shop boys as well...

But which one?
if you're sticking to the '85 cut off date, you've 2 choices - west end girls and opportunities (let's make lots of money). both stone cold classics, but for preference i'd go with suburbia (1986) personally...

Hm - I actually thought they were slightly earlier than that!

I am sticking to my guns so...West End Girls it is.

Alphaville - Big In Japan.

Which nudged me here.. , not their best, and neither is this by Dillinger, but this album was all over? (mainly cos of the cover and title)

Not pop but this definitely was. herbie hancock rockit

which means you must have some Luther

Just spreading it out - some of this still sounds a bit grim!
