Budapest - travel tips, things to see and do etc

Get thee to a public bath for a few hours of drinking beer, watching old drunk guys play chess, a nice massage etc.

It's a bit touristy but the Fisherman's Bastion is a lovely place. There was a busker playing whilst I was there. Lovely!

Yes, I second visiting one of the thermal baths. I went to the Gellert Baths a long time ago. Beautiful architecture.

Dont argue with the doormen and never stare at a Magyar.

Apart from that it's so long since I was there I can't remember any specific places to go, lovely city though.

This video will give you some ideas of what to do and where to go.

I wholhartedly recommend Szimpla. Go visit the St Stephens Basilica. There's a nice view from up there. Oh... and go to the baths- !!

Me and my then girlfriend found out that 'nightclub' means something very different over there when asking for directions :D

Margaret Island is alright to wander round and in general I much preferred the Buda side of things.

I went to the cathedral about 20 years ago, they had the hand of St Stephen, went to the case it was in, couldn't see a thing! Noticed a coin slot next to it, put in a few florins, Lights came on to reveal a bony hand

There's an Island full of clubs in the middle of the Danube, cheesy, but high spec and affordable.
Taxi driver was very helpful sorting out something to help burn of the goulash, may have got lucky though.
Tokai is a lovely tipple.
You'll like the Gelert baths, segregated though, which is a shame if you're with your Missus, or not, and looking for one. ;)

The King's Labyrinth is amazing, especially after 6pm when you have to find your way round it with a torch. I think it's closed now, though. Other than that, Budapest is a great place - just walk around and enjoy. (Obviously make sure you do both sides of the river.)

Thanks everyone. Only just catching up with all the replies but very much appreciated. God bless Urban and its masses !!!

The Szechenyi baths are fantastic. I doubt you'll want to spend much time in the outside bits but the indoor ones are interesting.
Its quite a way out of town, but I enjoyed my visit here - http://www.mementopark.hu
I'll vouch for both of those - tho would add that the outsides fine even in winter.

And do go eat at the Marquis de Salade - not just the best named restaurant in the world, but really bloody good too. Lots of veggie stuff, and cracking meat dishes http://www.marquisdesalade.hu

Marxim is a jolly good (Stalinist themed!) pizza restaurant too

Oh yeah I did one of the free walking tours, I can't remember which one, but it was really good.

I lived in Budapest for a while and used to go here http://www.stjupat.hu/rolunk-eng.htm its cheap and mounds of Hungarian food (not good for veggies tho) and here http://marximpub.hu/ for a weird soviet themed pizza place (ah see it has been mentioned above).

I also like the Children's Railway (a railway staffed by children) - http://www.gyermekvasut.hu/english/chrw_home.php although I think you have to take a couple of buses to get to it

Other than that - spend time in coffee shops drinking coffee and eating cake - I particularly like Muvesz Kavehz near the opera house for faded glamour.

Go to the "Hospital in the Rock" bunker/cave museum under castle hill, you have to go ´round the other side from the main castle entrance on the back road. I thought it was bloody brilliant (bloody cold though, take layers), you go really deep under the hill and will see all sorts of interesting things that bring part of Budapest's history alive a bit. I still remember 'sugár' means radiation  :D

If it's not awful weather try and go out to the caves out of town, meant to be really interesting. I wanted to do that but didn't have time. Memento park looked really good but leave half a day at least for it, cos as others have said, it's far out.

I'd go to a variety of different bathhouses, not just szechenyi, as whilst it's very impressive, it's pretty touristy and expensive too, or at least it was in the summer. definitely worth going though and the park around it is good for a wander, too.

Couchsurfing meet up I went to was in a really cool restaurant with an outdoor patio area, probably too cold now but it was a cool place, pretty central and had excellent food. http://www.epiteszpince.hu/

The szechenyi baths are awesome, Id love to go back. It was hilarious watching the local men standing up on the seats in the hottest sauna, as if it wasnt already burning the knackers off them. :D The outside pool with the chess players was fab, although those guys are good!

I also second the recommendation for Fatal restaurant, although fgs dont over order, the portions are insane! Another fab restaurant is the one thats run only by women (dont know the name but its in the guide books, neat Szechenyi baths and the zoo), its around the corner from the most expensive restaurant in town, do not make the mistake my friends made when we arranged to meet them in the cheaper womens restaurant and go to the wrong one! :)

The statue park thing was alright, although it had some fab commie stuff in the gift shop.

We struggled to find bars until we realised they were all hidden away, found some fab ones but dont remember the names.

I loved Budapest, Id love to go back.

A friend and I are going to Budapest next weekend. We're mainly going to get some Christmas spirit, European spirit and see and do things we can't here in Istanbul. Would love some tips! What's good to eat and drink? Where can we shop (supermarket type place) for cheese, meat and booze at good prices?

Thank you!

those baths are fantastic, and there's plenty of others. get a travel card, take a ride on the 2nd oldest tube system, still with wooden panelling, and the river bus, visit the central market for loads of food, stuff and tourist tat and eat poppy seed and sour cherry pastries from street vendors and a zillion cake shops.

The spas are great, everything is relatively cheap. The river at night is stunning so maybe a boat trip. Interesting your coming from Turkey given the history of the city. Enjoy its great and unspoilt by tourism so far
