Brum Edward's No.8 club burns down

Meh, good place.

Lets hope the property developers dont get it :(

now you see, this might be me being cynical but it is THE ONLY building around there that the developers haven't got, and only the other week did bees and I say we were surprised they hadn't forced a sale or something

hoping it was just an accident :(

I know what you mean.
Lubi works with someone who puts on nights there, and the developers have been on the cards for a while now. However, apparently the building is listed so they can't sell it on for development (I suppose that changes if it's gutted!)
And the fire started in the toilets... hmmm :(

In a similar vain, does anyone know what happened to the Queue Club in the end?
The last I heard was that it had been bought by developers to be turned into luxury apartments, but it was listed so they weren't allowed to make structural changes... which made me smile, not sure how true it is though. Or have they got round it by making temporary changes and turning it into offices?

well its still all shut up but with boards advertising flats

its really weird, its been like this for 3 years now

What a waste :(
The Que must be the longest running "will they won't they" sag in clubbing history!

Such a shame, it was easilly the best large venue in the country IMO. The atmosphere looking down on a packed dancefloor from the tiered seating in the main room was fantastic.

I'll never forget being at the very top of the clock tower one night whilst completely fucked and looking out over brum

Apparently they think someone let a firework off in the lads toilets and it went up into the roof....so that was rather clever!!

I must admit to thinking it could be a bit suspicious (for various reasons) and then thought, no, not when there were people inside.............

There is that, but the cynic in me thinks it would look even more suspicious if the club was empty
Iirc. there's only one set of stairs (guess there must be a fire escape too) so it is very lucky no one got hurt

I had my suspicions when i heard about this, i hope they rebuild and not sell it off. Feck all else decent places in Brum nowadays, unless you want to wear shoes...

It's been years since I was in that building and the interior could have been changed a few times but I sem to remember there was a back staircase at the other end of the building from where the entrance was.
Yes, I know what you are saying about it looking more suspicious if there had been no one in the building.

Wasn't the final straw the kid who died falling down the lift shaft? I'm sure that's what my bro told me a while back...third hand from a promoter who was trying to get a night at the Que.

Agree that it was great venue for club nights, gigs etc. that main room came close to beign a religious experience more than few times between 92 and 94 :D

Not sure whether that was the final straw... it happened a few years before it closed I think. Not sure whether it was a lift shaft either... I seem to remember that he'd climbed up on the speaker stacks on the balcony (I could be wrong though)

The Cook Report on how easy it was to score definately marked the beginning of the end imo. You used to know it was getting towards the end of the night when all the security were on stage dancing :D But the last time I went (as a punter) they were getting people to take their shoes off when being searched on the door and inside they were pointing people out with lazer pointers just for making a roll-up

Shame that...never went in the latter stages of its life but back in the early to mid 90s it was a great place - never felt a vibe like it since at any other venue.

Indeed :D

I remember at the velvet revolution, when loads of people in riot gear marched onto the stage banging their shields. Still remember the look of panic on a few peoples munted faces :D
And pyrotechnics too!!

Yeah, third eye ball when everyone was twatted and a man in a police uniform on stilts walking round saying random stuff :D

:D

I might have some of these still lying around. If I have I'll scan 'em and post 'em up. Although I have a feeling I might have chucked 'em all when I moved flat last year...

I seem to have thrown out my Brummie flyer collection. I did find some Criminal Justice Bill campaign stuff though...

Fuck, that takes me back.

The Aardvark sign was up again for a few months recently- the newsagent that took the place over closed down and took his sign with him, revealing the 'vark in all its glory. Did a proper double take when I first clocked it!:D
