Oooh, hope you like Ostel. I really liked it's quirkiness, and the location's great, although the breakfasts in the pub were a little odd - you'll see what I mean ;)

I forget to mention the Bauhaus Archive which is a must if you're into design: http://www.bauhaus.de/english/index.htm

Enjoy quimmy and mango - tis a fab city!

The DDR museum in Berlin is ace .....

Plus the Wansee conference house if you want the final solution experience as a sobering experience

The Techical Museum is more than good too ....do a bit of googling ! (really interesting area which was no mans land in the wall era)

Plus Kreutzberg for the alternative edge ....

Cheers for this. I have a tradition of visiting science museums around the world, and this one looks great! :o

um, well in the end I didn't go to Berlin. Couldn't face the 12 hour train journey from there to Vienna.

I went to Bruges for 2 nights, Frankfurt for 1 night (mostly just to break the journey), Salzburg for 2 nights Vienna for 2 nights and my friend's wedding, then a mad dash back (in train terms) on the night train from Vienna leaving last night at midnigth and getting home an hour or so ago.

I absolutely loved Bruges. The weather was fabulously hot but not steamy like in big cities. It's quite petite and very bike centric. Very pretty indeed. The first evening i had a meander about finishing off the evening having a little drink in the main square. My gin cost me €11.70!!! Stick to the beer, seriously. Night life is a bit quiet, except for one group of british lads, but then I wasn't exactly there for clubbing. The next day I hired a bike ( as you look at the main building with the post office on your left in the MARKT go down the street on the right of it you can hire a bike for a day for €12 - take your credit card and pay in the hotel reception then collect your bike) and cycled about 5km to Les Dammes village. Gorgeous day, lovely to get out into the countryside. Came back and cycled round bruges for a bit stopping off here and there. Went to a livelyish bar called Bauhaus on Langestraat after eating. It's attached to a hostel and the barman guy was friendly and helpful. They have internet at the bar and you can sit and have a beer, which was useful for me on my own and needing to plan the next part of my trip. Some of the beers are very strong so tell them if you only want a weaker one. Didnt' fiind the time to visit any museums apart from climbing up a windmill which should cost €2 or something but it was the end of the day and the man couldn't be bothered taking money off me.

So that was Bruges.

People forget that Vienna and Berlin are 800 kms apart.
Train times have come down but it is still a nine and a half hour train journey though you can also do it overnight and sleep the whole way.

If you are ever in the area again you can break up that journey by stopping in Brno, Prague or Dresden.

No you can't, so my sources inform me. A lot of night trains seem to have been withdrawn. I would have done that if I could. And after last night's night train experience i'd challenge the ''sleep the whole way'' claim too...

Lovely theory.

Train D202 / EN 476 leaves Wien Westbahnhof at 2212 daily and arrives Berlin Hauptbahnhof at 0914. :)

Just got that out of my Czech Railways timetable and checked online with Deutsche Bahn.

Berlin Hauptbahnhof depart at 1900, arrive Wien Westbahnhof at 0630.
Train number is 477 / 203.

Daytimes you often have to change, I'd reccomend doing so at Breclav in the South East of the Czech Republic, which despite being a major junction in the trans Europe rail network has a very user friendly station. Your connection will just be on the opposite platform.

welcome back!

we are going this weekend  sounds like you had a lovely time in Bruges...we plan to go straight to Brussels then off to Midi market then Bruges the next day then back to Brussels...

I love beer but bad luck to my companions who loathe beer

Hmm. I'm sure I asked about them and was told no.

Never mind. I'm glad I didn't go now. Vienna was too full on for my mood as it was. Two big cities would have been annoying.

thanks softybabe.

Seems like you had a good trip anway.
Did you go to the Naschmarkt in Vienna, I love it there, everything from lsh food to bric-a-brac.

Hated it?! Ohhhh! I've heard such good things about it. Added it to list of places to visit.

I'd probably like it another time. Anyway, I've still got Salzburg (and Frankfurt) to cover before we get onto Vienna.

Most people hate Frankfurt. Think of it as a mixture of Canary Wharf and Kings Cross when it used to be more seedy.

Some large cities can be a "bit much" in the major holiday season. I loathe Prague in the summer for that reason.

I only stopped off there one night to break the journey. I was knackered but made myself go out for a drink of applewine in sachenhausen (sp?). Was falling asleep over it and my plans to get up early and walk about came to nought. I had to get the tram and still missed my train.

I think it probably was the shock of the big city after sleepy places. I think it would have been better to do Vienna first then meander back to the UK. Like I say I'll give it another chance another time.
