i get a month free if I refer someone. Ooh, pick me dub, pick me!

£28 makes sense - 24 plus 4 for the static IP.

Ok, i'll let you refer me if i can pick yer brains as well. Do you know, I don't even know if i have an ethernet connection :(

both of these

# An Ethernet port for a wire connection to the Be Box
# A 802.11b or 802.11g compatible network adapter for wireless connection to the Be Box

i'm not sure about :(

You almost certainly have a) and if you don't it can easily be fixed. b) doesn't matter unless you want to do wireless (which I doubt)

pretty sure it's uncapped, just signed up for the bt wireless hub, £22.99 a month for first 6 months, plus line rental, i doubt i download that much anyway

actually, i do cos I'm fed up with trailing cables.. will it cost much/

this is where i find out that the weird little case that wolfie put the PC i use in won't let me attach a card. :(

if i can't, can it be got round?

can i use a wireless dongle thing?
Yes, a USB one will work fine.

Personally, I'd be worried about wireless not giving me the full bandwidth of the broadband connection to the computer. Wires are so much more reliable.

I went live with this yesterday.

The BeBox has Ethernet, wireless and USB connection, so you shouldn't have any probelm connecting.

Down: 14.0Mb
Up: 1.2Mb

£24 per month

Oh yes of course, if your computer is close enough to the phone socket, then plain old USB will do you fine :)

right, i'm bound to have more dumb questions, but crispy - once i've sorted it i'd be happy for you to recommend me :)

(means you'll be my broadband support bitch, though :D )

my hub is close to the computer, the phone line is in another room:(

Go for it Dub, apart from a few teething problems when they first launched, Be* have been rock solid, and the speeds are fantastic, no extra costs, and only 20 quid! (Early sign up promo).

Plus, as long as the wire going to your house is alright, you should be able to expect 18meg down, 1.3 meg up, as I'm assuming you'll be on the same exchange as me as you're just over the road.

As for support, I have had to call them a couple of times. Given the low cost, inevitably support is outsourced, and in Be's case is based in Sophia, Bulgaria. Despite that, I've found them to be speedy and knowledgable. For instance they changed the records on our static IP in about 20 minutes from the ticket first being raised - and that's including two clarifications from me as I didn't instruct them properly.

Actually, this is where my research kicks in - O2 now own Be and aren't happy about the support being outsourced so it's coming back to the UK fairly soon.

the only thing that does worry me about the takeover is potential price increases

Well so far they've been pretty good at keeping their hands off and allowing the company to develop and get their kit in exchanges nationwide.

I would say that if they are bringing the support back to the UK there will have to be rises to pay for it.

I'd still say that even for a tenner more, it's one of the best services in the country, and the speeds are difficult to beat by anyone in the residential market.

Let's just hope o2 don't ruin the service by offering shitty "free" broadband to all their customers and clogging the pipe up.

Personally I wouldn't touch those USB wireless dongles with a bargepole...If you've got a desktop PC, get a PCI card and fit it inside the machine, it will be alot more reliable from my experience.

I think he means the modem will link straight to the computer via USB if they're all close enough :)

Oops sorry my mistake, I should really learn to read threads more before butting in. :)

:p

it's more like (In January for example) - 20 or so movies, some as 4gb ISOs, and the entire Blood & Fire and Pressure Sounds catalogue (50+ albums each) and all the other stuff..
So every month you're getting more stuff than you can actually watch/listen to in that month?

What do you do with it all? :D

I have be there. I was downloading stuff off torrents at about 400Ks and then decided to download stuff of the subscribers MSDN site, got 1000Ks off that. Hehe. Its great.

The 1.3Meg up makes keeping the ratio reasonably painless. I let it run at 100Ks and that's still plenty headroom for everything else.

Be warned, you might not get these speeds but its not going to be less than what your already getting. If your current DSL router is 1/2 decent you can have a look around to find out your line attenuation figures (lower the better) for your line. Using this graph

http://www.beforum.co.uk/forum/default.aspx?f=2&m=3875

will indicate the speed you could possibly expect, its rough guide. Mine are 7.5dB/21.5db and I get 16mbs, I have 'gaps' which reduce speed. You might have to buy a new ADSL master socket face plate. I did and got a 4Mbs jump in speed.

They do have a fair use policy, someone on the forums has mentioned 100Gb a month.
