what, like you wanking on about Ipods the other day? you're full of it, mate.

hasn't it occurred to you that a capped package might suit some people?

Hasn't the same occurred to you (think: music)?

Er ok. As I said above I didn't realise how easy some people get swayed into things like capped internet. When I look into getting something I research it and don't commit unless I understand what it is I'm committing too (hence my threads on here about various phones and other gadgets etc). I like to know full well what it is I'm buying, if it's the best for my needs and budget etc.

I really don't like wasting money on mistakes that can be avoided by a little insight.

But a capped connection isn't automatically a mistake - it might suit some people. But you have real trouble seeing options other than those that suit you.

not in the sense you mean, no. I don't ever tell people they're wrong for liking something (unless it's in a lighthearted sense), i'll just say why i don't like it. It's a crucial difference you'd do well to learn. :)

Because maybe not everyone can afford the more expensive packages, and as it's my b/f who's paying for this (although he doesn't understand what exactly he's paying for), I had to make a decision.

There's no point paying extra for unlimited when the fact is, he's probably going to be too scared to use the internet when I'm at work and not home to supervise him.

I'm at work so use it there. I don't know how/and don't even feel the need to download videos/watch tv, music etc. so thought I'd start off on something light.

I also didn't want a 12 month contract so just went for Zen as a sort of starter package to see how we went. I was tempted by Be and if I'm not happy with Zen, may well move over to them.

They're helpdesk/customer support is also rated very highly and idiots like me need that. :D

So, that's how I was swayed :p

Yeah right. I never said they were wrong for choosing a capped service just that I found it odd...

Fair enough. How much are you paying a month?

yes

see, that's more like it - helpful suggestions rather than snide comments (i refer you once again to the thread about my mp3 player :) )

Well that would've been forthcoming sooner without your snide remarks and cross thread bullshit.;) Basically I said I found it odd, they could've responded with the above, I'd suggested my link without you're interjection.

£18, which I KNOW is steep, but my main priorities were 1) good customer service, 2) no long contracts and 3) price.

There's loads of other cheaper ones out there but you just seem to read complaint after complaint about them.

I'm not saying Zen have 100% customer satisfaction, but it seems quite a bit better than Orange/Talk Talk and the others offering fantastically cheap deals

I've touched on 15mbit on my Be connection (downloading a Linux kernel from the mirror service if you're interested), out of a possible 18 out of 24mbit (due to distance from the exchange)

I'm happy :)

They's who I's looking at.

Yeah I'd avoid Talk Talk, Sky Broadband and Orange, I've heard nothing but crap about them. Tbh it's no surprise because those services aren't from proper ISPs (Internet Service Providers; dedicated companies selling net access), they're just other companies trying to out do their competitors with add ons to their main business.

£18? Is that excluding phone? Fair point about the 12 month contract but anything less for a good service isn't easy to find from what I can see.

Virgin ime (and NTL Telewest and even going back to Blueyonder Telewest) have always had good customer service ime (not that I've ever really needed it). When I first got them the guy on the phone even helped me get my pda on the wifi network something they didn't have to do as the wifi network was set up by me not them!

£18 is just for internet.

Virgin Mobile are good customer service but I wasn't sure about internet. Will stick with Zen for now (especially as you have the extra costs of connection fee and price of the modem), so I'll have to stay with them for a while to take into consideration the extra dosh that was forked out :o

Fair enough. God that 2gb cap would kill me...

Anyway, if you do consider changing or if your partner wants to get his head round this stuff I'd recommend having a good read of http://www.thinkbroadband.com/

my partner will never get his head round it.:D He's lost his memory

He's only been on it once since we got it and he ended up massively confuddled and went to bed :D

Nothing wrong paying over the odds if you've done your research and you're going for a premium product. I like duck eggs and will pay over the odds for them. Someone buying battery eggs by the tray would piss themselves if they compared the per egg cost and probably label me a mug into the bargain. So fucking what ? I know what I like :D

Do you use something like netmeter to keep track of your internet usage ?? It gives you stats on your usage, both instantaneous and per week/month/whatever interval you like. If you enter your monthly cap, it will give you a warning if your current rate of usage is likely to put you over by the end of the month.

Netmeter? Will have a look at though. Zen said they said you an email when you reach 50, 70 and 95% capacity, but I'd rather have an idea now, so might have a look at that shortly. No doubt, it's not going to be straightforward for me though

It's German

It's written by a german, but is in english!

9.9.9 beta 2 is the one to go for and doesn't seem hard to setup. I'd attach a jpg of the options page but I can't get the fecking image down below 14K  There's only 3 relevant bits: When does your billing period start (1st of month), what is the download cap (2G in your case) and what does it apply to (normally just downloads)

I must be on totally the wrong page. I only see a page in German when you click on the Freenet icon and on the 9.9.9 beta 2 I can a bar chart thing come up. I can't see where I'm meant to put anything else in

TBH, my Be connection is so good, fast and reliable that I'm going to sublet it to the pub customers (I'm living above a pub at the mo as a perk of my job) on a free wifi connection so they can do the whole "Working From Home" thing during the day :D

I just got 1600Ks off my Bethere connection! Downloaded XP Home edition from the Microsoft site in 5 minutes.

Dub, quite a low speed your getting, post up the page your line stats from the Bebox.

Enter bebox in the url. Log in. Goto Broadband connection and then click Details in the top right. Mine are

To see if they match what you are getting.

Shit, got to start watching my bandwidth. 60Gb in 10 days. I think its 100Gb month and they start to notice you...

Hmm, language must be cookied somehow for me.

This is the download link for 9.9.9 B2

Strangely enough I get consistently close to 8 on my Zen connection, which is as it should be really. Someone living on the same street with Be (theoretically 32mb) generally gets slower speeds than I do.

Zen is a little overpriced though, but I've got nothing but praise for their service and the way they deal with any problems.

but they're paying a lot less and getting an uncapped service, which is why i switched.

they do deal with problems quickly, but their accounts are a mess, they fucked up my payments more than once.

Just got a message from Zen saying "Your Zen 8000 Lite broadband service has a monthly download usage allowance of 2.00 gigabytes, of which you have used 1.00 gigabytes this month" and I've been on since 28 March so it looks like 2.00 gigabytes is fine for me.

So all those people who laughed at my limited usage :p
